About Mark Wray

A highly experienced and professional leader, responsible person, project and programme manager with a passion for sustainable living and mainstreaming innovation led economic development through technology and science. A Chartered Civil Engineer (ICE Fellow) and expanded in to most aspects of delivery of the built environment and wider cross cutting industries - in particular in maritime and defence, including dual use technologies. I have an extensive network and enjoy a wide range of activities and group membership to benefit from the wealth of innovation and forward thinking available, particularly around subjects like inclusivity and social value.Particular focus of career has been on innovation, investment and economic growth, market making and cluster development, clean energy, climate change adaptation, digital design & engineering, circular economy and enhanced build processes (manufacturing). I have been at the forefront of transformation in the construction sector and am now returning with passion to addressing climate change and productivity challenges in the Maritime & Ports sector for the private and public sector. With a focus on decarbonising, digitising and autonomy, improved productivity along with a wider interest area in future energy solutions such as next generation batteries and the hydrogen economy. I am responsible for the delivery of a tailored innovation service - the Freeport Innovation Network, to compliment the Regulatory Engagement Network established by the Government in support of the Freeport Initiative and working alongside senior civil servants driving innovation in these areas of economic development.Previous major focus initiatives relate to decarbonising industries in the pursuit of Net Zero. I co-led our work on exploring sustainability issues in the defence sector and supporting BEIS with delivery of the energy consumption aspects within the £1BN Net Zero Innovation Programme. Providing expertise in the design, delivery and assessment of programmes in areas such as energy efficiency, carbon capture storage and utilisation, hydrogen usage, red diesel and industrial fuel replacement.
