The Connected Places Catapult (CPC) is the UK's premier innovation accelerator for cities, transport and place leadership, being one of a network of Catapults across the UK. We connect businesses and public sector leaders to cutting edge research to spark innovation and grow new markets. We run technology demonstrators and SME accelerators to scale new solutions that drive growth, spread prosperity and eliminate carbon. We curate collaborative 'Innovation-as-a-Service' solutions for businesses, public bodies, and infrastructure providers to catalyse step change improvements in the way people live, work and travel.I have joined the Ecosystem team as Director for Maritime & Ports aligning with fellow Directors from Place Leadership, Homes & Housing, Integrated Infrastructure, Air Mobility & Airports and Rail & Rail Stations. Together we develop the Strategies for the CPC in our respective Industry Focused Ecosystems. We map the actors and activity in our sectors and strive to form collaborative relationships to deliver the innovation agenda in these disciplines. In maritime and ports I will be focused on our sectors greatest innovation opportunities - to deliver transformation through digitisation and decarbonisation, ensuring that the sector is prosperous, resilient and minimising its environmental impact through the use of new technologies and solutions.

Mark worked across sectors with colleagues in defence, digital, manufacturing, transport, space, urban living and energy systems as part of the Clean Energy & Infrastructure sector team. A highly experienced and professional consultant, project and programme manager with a passion for sustainable living and mainstreaming innovation. A Chartered Civil Engineer by training and early career but expanded in to most aspects of delivery of the built environment and wider cross cutting industries - including energy, defence and maritime. I have an extensive network and enjoy a wide range of activities and group membership to benefit from the wealth of innovation and forward thinking available in sectors including construction, transport and defence.A particular focus of my latter career has been on innovation, integration of energy systems, energy efficiency, climate change adaptation, digital design & engineering, circular economy and enhanced build processes. I led the Decarbonising Ports & Harbours Innovation Network, which morphed in to the Maritime & Ports Innovation Network as we expanded in to automation and digital technologies as well as decarbonising. Our highlights included a landscape map identifying the scale of the decarbonising ports challenge and the range of solution providers; a series of podcasts exploring hot topics and a industry insights report on decarbonising pathways.This ports work spawned a further Freeport Innovation Network project and expanded in to innovation support across the Levelling Up agenda including Investment Zones. I also was part of the cross KTN Defence Team leading KTN sustainability aspects. My earlier career focussed on infrastructure design & delivery, procurement, contract management, carbon management and sustainable design.I am quite a broad generalist with a strong vision for the future and emerging market opportunities to deliver the future today.

Innovate UK is strengthening its regional presence - a key part in delivering on our 5 point plan. Our focus is on the need to:- increase engagement with regional stakeholders- define the need for, and form of, Innovate UK's future regional presence- identify the opportunities to build on excellence and achieve high impact economic growth.A strategic role in the South West region to scope and make recommendations on Innovate UK’s future management of key stakeholder relationships in the region, and on the need and form for any future physical presence.We are deployed to develop an understanding of the regional opportunities to accelerate high impact economic growth and communicate them back to our Sector teams. Identifying these by bringing together Innovate UK sector priorities and previous high growth investments with the plans and strategies of the regional stakeholders, brokering the necessary sector-specific conversations so that specific targeted opportunities can be investigated.I am looking forward to getting back to my home region and supporting it's economic plans to reach the pinnacle of innovation and growth.

Whilst at the RDA I had a broad portfolio of responsibility in relation to the built environment. My primary roles included representing the region and influencing Government and delivery partners in sustainable development; project and programme management; carbon management; development strategy; financial management; procurement - tendering and bidding; funding appraisals and econmoic development evalautions; promotion of sustainable practices in procurement and social sustainability; promotion of low carbon sources of energy including renewable energy sources at a micro and large scale - including working on aspects of Wave Hub.With the disbanding of the RDA's by the coalition Government, I was made redundant in September 2011.
