Supported Employment Director
Helping those with a mental health diagnosis achieve meaningful employment through support. Last year our team helped 32 people gain employment!Testimony from one of our clients who just started first job in over two years:"For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with anxiety. When I was in my early 20's, I also started to experience symptoms of psychosis. A short time later, I was diagnosed. The combination of these two diseases was frightening, and put me in a vulnerable position I had never been in before. Not only was I scared, but I also felt alone. I immediately started taking medication and began seeking treatment. One of the many different ways I have helped myself is by volunteering at the NAMI Rise and Shine Cafe. The suggestion first came to me from my mother, who had heard about the program from a friend. I am very thankful that this program was brought to my attention, as I have instantly felt at home since joining the cafe. I started by just volunteering one day a week, and as my confidence grew, I picked up more days until I felt comfortable volunteering there days a week. The cafe not only has provided me with the stability similar to having a job, but it has given me the chance to meet people who struggle with things similar to what I, myself, struggle with. Those, perhaps, have been the two most important things to my recovery. Now, instead of feeling sad or upset because of my situation, I feel fortunate. I am happy to have gained the knowledge and experience of volunteering at the cafe and I know it has made me a better person. Overall, NAMI and the Rise and Shine cafe have given me hope and even understanding during a difficult period of my life. The NAMI staff as a whole has been understanding and supportive, more so than I could ever ask. I believe that I would not be where I am today in my recovery without the people I have met over my time at the Rise and Shine cafe."
