Early in my career, I became president and chief executive officer of an unprofitable bank that lacked strategic direction, capital, written policies and procedures, and staff training. The challenges were daunting but taught me to evaluate business models, set and communicate strategic direction, design and implement detailed systems, implement risk management and pricing systems, and recruit and train board members and staff.The bank became a highly successful niche financial institution. I served as CEO for over 25 years and I owned 99% of the bank for over 14 years. In 2017, I sold the bank because the regulatory environment significantly impacted the bank's niche strategy. It became more advantageous to merge with another bank.After selling the bank, I returned to Jackson Kelly to resume my legal practice and pursue business and corporate governance consulting with financial institutions, nonprofits, and small businesses. My legal, consulting, and board service professional life centered on:• Facilitating board and senior management planning and development efforts ,• Participating and consulting on board governance functions,• Providing legal and business advice related to contracts, mergers, and acquisitions,• Supporting compliance with financial service regulations, and• Advising business leaders on cyber-security and privacy risk management.I have a passion for community banking and helping businesses, entrepreneurs, and nonprofits thrive. That passion has led me to my current role as incoming President and CEO for the West Virginia Bankers Association. I am fortunate to follow the outgoing President and CEO, Sally Cline, under whose leadership the association has continued to innovate and strengthen.I am honored and humbled that the bankers in the State of West Virginia have entrusted me with leading an organization vital to the sustaining the vibrant and dynamic financial services industry positively impacting the lives of West Virginians throughout the state. I look forward to carrying forward the Association's mission and exploring new initiatives to improve the association's value to its member banks and the citizens of West Virginia.
