My doctoral thesis focuses on improving automated bird population monitoring, crucial for conservation efforts amidst changing ecological conditions. The research aims to create efficient systems capable of operating on low-resource devices, particularly in remote areas where manual observation is challenging. Using few-shot learning techniques, the thesis explores methods for detecting bird sounds, vital for practical fieldwork. Furthermore, it integrates learnable frontends into deep learning systems, enabling direct learning of better audio representations from raw waveforms. This work has led to four publications, including three peer-reviewed conference papers presented at IEEE ICASSP, IWAENC, and SiPS.

Tara Mines

As an intern at Boliden Tara Mines, I played a key role in the Mill Engineering Department, focusing primarily on Preventative Maintenance initiatives and contributing to various projects. My responsibilities included conducting daily Preventative Maintenance Checks on equipment and utilising Time-series and Fourier Analysis techniques to monitor and identify potential faults in mechanical equipment. Additionally, I collaborated with machinists to implement a new, more efficient preventative maintenance system. This involved incorporating innovative features such as NFC tags for tracking, automated data entry, and designing user-friendly interfaces. Moreover, I engaged with clients and contractors, providing on-site assistance and fostering positive relationships.
