Mark Cartwright is an Assistant Professor of Informatics at New Jersey Institute of Technology. His research lies at the intersection of human-computer interaction and machine learning applied to audio and music. Specifically, he researches human-centered machine listening and audio processing tools that enable new interactions for creative expression through sound and understanding the acoustic world at scale. Recently, his research has focused on the machine listening and citizen science research agendas of the Sounds of New York City (SONYC) project, a large NSF-funded project to monitor, analyze, and mitigate urban noise pollution with the aid of a smart acoustic sensor network. During his PhD studies in computer science at Northwestern University, he developed and patented natural audio production tools that help novice musicians mix and produce music by using familiar interactions such as descriptive language and vocal imitation. He also holds an MA in Music Science and Technology from Stanford University and a BMus in Music Technology from Northwestern University. He comes to NJIT from New York University, where he was a research assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and was affiliated with the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) and the Music and Audio Research Lab (MARL).
