Profile bio

About Mark Casey

I'm a highly experienced journalist and newsroom leader who builds effective teams delivering positive results. Whether connecting to communities, growing audiences, or delivering revenue, I develop and execute strategies to meet/exceed objectives. My background experiences include reporter, photographer, producer and news manager at top properties owned by Scripps, Cox, 21st Century Fox, Walt Disney Company, and TEGNA/Gannett. I believe strongly that journalism is an essential service. To sustain it, training and coaching newsroom leaders is highly important. I've been fortunate to assist many in achieving senior leadership in media/community organizations.Phoenix has been home since 1999. From 2018-21, I led ABC15 Arizona's newsroom (E.W. Scripps) where our focus was market-leading investigative and enterprise coverage. From 1999-2016, I served as News Director, then VP-News, then VP-Station Manager of TEGNA-owned KPNX-TV/12 News. From 2010-2015, as a senior manager with Republic Media, I oversaw 12 News' merger with The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com. In 2012, this unprecedented blending of distinct media cultures was a finalist for an innovation award from the AP Media Editors.In 2022, I worked as interim news director at WPTV in West Palm Beach, FL (E.W. Scripps) and in 2024 at News4Jacksonville (Graham Media) tasked with assessing coverage, content, and staff. In 2016 and 2017, I consulted Vietnam Television (VTV) on multi-platform journalism and free speech. Since 2023, I've been a contributing writer to Lake Country Journal, a magazine highlighting the Brainerd Lakes Region of North Central Minnesota. I am currently working on two non-fiction books.Because I was fortunate to work with exceptional team-oriented journalists, we share credit for 40+ awards including two duPont Columbia Awards, the broadcast equivalent of a Pulitzer Prize, and the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award. Others include Rocky Mountain Emmy Award for Station Excellence, National Headliner Awards, a national AP Award, and a national Investigative Reporters and Editors award. Advocacy for government transparency resulted in a First Amendment Award from the Phoenix Society of Professional Journalists. Volunteering and community service is a personal priority, especially addressing food insecurity and natural resource conservation. My board service: Arizona Food Bank Network, Lakes Area Food Shelf (MN), and Mission Lakes Association (MN). I earned a BSJ from West Virginia University and a Master of Public Administration from UNC Charlotte.

Listed skills include Broadcast Journalism, Broadcast, Journalism, News Writing, and 32 others.

News Director

News Director for ABC 15 Arizona an E.W. Scripps station. Focused on quality journalism built on award-winning investigations, in-depth public affairs reporting, and holding elected officials accountable.

Sep 2018 - Apr 2021

Director Of Public Information

Phoenix, Arizona

I was appointed Director of Public information in December of 2016, both because my background was neither typical “PIO” nor in law enforcement. MCSO’s troubles are well documented. The Office’s media, public, and internal image needed a major makeover as former Sheriff Joe Arpaio exited office, replaced by a reform-minded law enforcement professional with a well-developed media profile. I was tasked with transforming a public information office that was little more than a publicity machine focused on over-the-top stunts and with a reputation for targeting, threatening and harassing members of the news media. At MCSO Public Information we:1. Produced major media events showcasing the Office’s commitment to a 21st century law enforcement approach that respects the law and the people we serve;2. Managed public records requests in an open and transparent manner with a bias toward releasing information, not hiding it;3. Rapidly responded to questions from the news media whether the stories published reflected positively or negatively on the Office;4. Created a contemporary internal newsletter with monthly electronic distribution, replacing a hard-copy, hand-delivered publication that looked a lot like a 1980’s high school newspaper;5. Relaunched social media channels to inform our communities and celebrate their and our successes;

Media And Journalism Consulting

Hanoi, Vietnam

Media and Journalism Consulting Vietnam Television (VTV) - October 2016 and June 2017Vietnam Television (VTV) is the national broadcaster of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, one of Asia’s most dynamic countries. Headquartered in Hanoi, VTV’s nine networks deliver diverse programming to a nation of 94 million people. From news to soap operas to reality TV to game shows, VTV touches audiences throughout Southeast Asia and reaches its large expatriate populations worldwide. VTV is challenged by the meteoric growth of social media and its place in a culture that tolerates some dissent and debate but sets no clear red line. Through a contract with American talent agency Media Stars and Toronto-based Professional Development Solutions our team conducted product assessment along with extensive orientation and training sessions designed to change workflow at VTV from television-centric to multi-platform. We also counseled on free speech, advocating for more, not less. This project was done in two separate visits, the first in October of 2016 and the second in June of 2017.

Our 10PM newscast was # 1 for 58 consecutive ratings periods (1999-2014). On the revenue side, 12 News maximized its audience growth while using local event strategies (Super Bowls, Elections, The World Cup,) to meet or exceed revenue targets over multiple quarters. 12 News is a valuable community service asset.
