I was appointed Director of Public information in December of 2016, both because my background was neither typical “PIO” nor in law enforcement. MCSO’s troubles are well documented. The Office’s media, public, and internal image needed a major makeover as former Sheriff Joe Arpaio exited office, replaced by a reform-minded law enforcement professional with a well-developed media profile. I was tasked with transforming a public information office that was little more than a publicity machine focused on over-the-top stunts and with a reputation for targeting, threatening and harassing members of the news media. At MCSO Public Information we:1. Produced major media events showcasing the Office’s commitment to a 21st century law enforcement approach that respects the law and the people we serve;2. Managed public records requests in an open and transparent manner with a bias toward releasing information, not hiding it;3. Rapidly responded to questions from the news media whether the stories published reflected positively or negatively on the Office;4. Created a contemporary internal newsletter with monthly electronic distribution, replacing a hard-copy, hand-delivered publication that looked a lot like a 1980’s high school newspaper;5. Relaunched social media channels to inform our communities and celebrate their and our successes;

Hanoi, Vietnam

Media and Journalism Consulting Vietnam Television (VTV) - October 2016 and June 2017Vietnam Television (VTV) is the national broadcaster of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, one of Asia’s most dynamic countries. Headquartered in Hanoi, VTV’s nine networks deliver diverse programming to a nation of 94 million people. From news to soap operas to reality TV to game shows, VTV touches audiences throughout Southeast Asia and reaches its large expatriate populations worldwide. VTV is challenged by the meteoric growth of social media and its place in a culture that tolerates some dissent and debate but sets no clear red line. Through a contract with American talent agency Media Stars and Toronto-based Professional Development Solutions our team conducted product assessment along with extensive orientation and training sessions designed to change workflow at VTV from television-centric to multi-platform. We also counseled on free speech, advocating for more, not less. This project was done in two separate visits, the first in October of 2016 and the second in June of 2017.

Phoenix, Arizona

Oversaw news, station technical and studio operations and was an active participant in developing community service and revenue solutions. KPNX is a top-rated newsroom that shared multimedia responsibilities with azcentral.com and The Arizona Republic until the companies separated in 2015. 12 News now operates its own site, 12news.com and associated branded social media platforms. Its staff of 100 is supported by a multi-million dollar budget and is responsible for developing daily news coverage and specials for a highly diverse audience covering most of the state of Arizona and competing against six other TV newsrooms. Our 10PM newscast was # 1 for 58 consecutive ratings periods (1999-2014). On the revenue side, 12 News maximized its audience growth while using local event strategies (Super Bowls, Elections, The World Cup,) to meet or exceed revenue targets over multiple quarters. 12 News is a valuable community service asset. We developed service programs to meet a wide range of needs including eliminating hunger, supporting military service families, providing media training for Native American students, and assisting high school students from minority communities apply for higher education opportunities.

Birmingham, Alabama Area

WBRC is the top-rated FOX affiliate in the nation’s 59th market. My responsibility in a short tenure was to reorganize and redirect its staff of 100 journalists to meet the cultural and product changes created by moving network affiliation from ABC to FOX; a change in ownership from Storer to FOX; and a transition from a diary-based ratings to household meter overnight ratings.

Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina Area

WTVD, owned by the Walt Disney Company, was the perennial # 2 player operating in a four-station news market dominated by family owned WRAL-TV. My directive was to rebuild and redirect the news gathering systems and presentation style for a newsroom responsible for covering the diverse geography and cultures of Central and Eastern North Carolina. In just short of three years, WTVD grew to # 1 in morning news and a close # 2 at 11PM while winning two regional Edward R. Murrow awards and being named Outstanding North Carolina News Operation by the Associated Press.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Charlotte, North Carolina - Dayton, Ohio

In a nearly 11-year career at three stations, my role was to reorganize and energize under-performing newsrooms. Highlights included award-winning coverage of the Major League Baseball drug scandal (1985) at WPXI; growing from # 2 to # 1 in all newscasts at WSOC-TV while winning two national awards – a National Headliner, and a National AP Award both for coverage of Hurricane Hugo; and in Ohio, winning a regional Edward R. Murrow Award and being named Outstanding Large Market News Operation by the Associated Press at WHIO-TV.

Buffalo/Niagara, New York Area

Started as dayside Assignments Editor then promoted (1983) to Assignments Manager of top-rated ABC affiliate in what was then the 35th market. Assignments included field producing coverage of the Democratic National Convention (1984) and the Visit of Pope John Paul II to Toronto (1984) and ongoing, award-winning coverage of the collapse of the U.S. auto and steel industries.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa Area

As a reporter and news manager, I covered the sprawling and diverse Eastern Iowa geography from Dubuque to Waterloo to Cedar Rapids as we reported on the collapse of the farm economy, a local woman held hostage in the American Embassy in the Iran Hostage Crisis, and the emerging national importance of the Iowa Caucuses.
