My colleagues say I love to solve problems. I wish I could disagree, because who really wants to deal with problems. However, Oxford dictionary defines a problem as, “an inquiry starting from given conditions to investigate or demonstrate a fact, result, or law.” I can work with that. I interpret it as designing in the context of a fixed set of constraints, conditions and unknowns.My family says I love to create things. At 4 years old I wanted to be an Architect, spending hours drawings streets, subdivisions and houses on sheets of paper taped together in ever growing canvases. That sounds more like urban planning, but those roads led straight to Architecture school. Architecture melded into Engineering and the fascination of how those work together.I say, “What will challenge me today?”• Building custom control systems by integrating Pronto, x10, Lutron, Honeywell, RS-232, TCP/IP, UDP and Javascript into a cohesive UI.• Designing and commissioning the audio, video and lighting systems for 500 to 2000 seat theatrical venues• Designing the power, lighting, fire alarm, nurse call and telecom systems for medium and large health care systems in Saint Louis, Michigan and Chicago• Creating a website for a local hospital• Building an intranet and CRM database utilizing SQL and XML backends on a C#.net framework that incorporates purchasing, vendor management, timesheets, order management and project tracking• Creating a feature utilizing green screen, multi-camera shots, CGI effect shots and miniature compositing with Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects and Autodesk 3D studio• Designing electrical and telecom systems for University of Missouri, UMass, Truman, IIT, SLU, Suffolk and UAB campus buildings.• Designing, documenting and building a scale model resort utilizing custom AutoCAD designed, 3D printed components• Managing IT for 80 plus users at an international AE firm• Serving as technical director, audio, video, and lighting technician for a 500-seat venue • Developing custom AutoCAD extensions to facilitate system design and documentation by linking AutoCAD, Excel and SQL databases using VBA and AutoLISP.• Programming Q-Sys DSP and control systems for theatrical facilities• Building custom solid oak craftsman style furnitureAs this list grows and I try new things, I realize each day presents a new opportunity to learn something. I like to keep my mind active whether it be on a computer, with pencil and paper, putting a puzzle together, building a scale model, or cutting dovetail joints.
