Abraham Mellish has seen a lot of darkness in his young life, but he still remains a hopeful and jubilant spirit. After surviving two civil wars in his homeland of Liberia, he found refuge and his own stirring voice in music.Influenced by Bob Dylan, Tracy Chapman, Lucky Dube, Seu Jorge and Fela Kuti, Abraham developed his own sound, combining traditional folk, funk, blues, and rock with an African pulse. His unique songs create an atmosphere of community, sharing his heritage and life story with an inspiring message. Using a second-hand instrument left behind by a visiting cousin, Abraham taught himself to play guitar in his late teenage years. Before finishing high school, he had written his first songs and begun to perform at open mics in the Dallas area.As Abraham continued to perform around the southern and midwestern states, he was so well received that he landed his first television appearance as the sole opener for American Idol Ruben Studdard at the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center. Bonnie Raitt's highly regarded former sound engineer Paul Middleton was introduced to Abraham by Amy Nelson, Willie's daughter- after she heard his original, 'Stare and Walk Away'. Paul invited Abraham to record at his farm outside Dallas a few years ago and we seek to build on the foundation of that and many performances in the Dallas and now Chicago areas.Please check out the GoFundMe page just created to support Abraham in his dream to spread a message of love, kindness, hope, and community through his music.
