Serves as the Company's Executive Officer; responsible for establishing and enforcing section procedures, assembling and supervising the section leaders during Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) ensuring a coordinated and synchronized maintenance and training plan each month; works with the Maintenance Control Officer, Supply Sergeant, and Automotive Chief Warrant Officer to prepare for inspection of the Command Maintenance Discipline Program (CMDP) to attain, sustain, and manage materiel readiness; ensures information flow between the section leaders and Commander on section recommendations, Commander's intent, CCIR, and the Commander's decisions, and section responsibilities; establishes and enforces planning timelines, enforcing standing operating procedures; and acts as Company Commander when they are absent.

The platoon leader leads his Soldiers by personal example and is responsible for all the platoon does or fails to do, having complete authority over his subordinates. This centralized authority enables him to maintain unit discipline, unity, and to act decisively. He must be prepared to exercise initiative within his company commander’s intent and without specific guidance for every situation.

The principal staff assistant to the commander in matters pertaining to organization, training, and primary operations. Also advises and assists other staff officers in the operational aspects of their particular activities.

Armor officers (19A) are required to understand mounted warfare from both a tank perspective and a scout perspective since the Army assigns them to Cavalry (reconnaissance and security focused) and Armor (decisive action focused) units. Learning the general tactics involved in these specific mission sets and the varying platforms that mounted units employ makes the 19-week ABOLC course one of the longer BOLCs in the Army.
