Mark is Associate Principal (International & Partnerships) at Heriot-Watt University, a global institution with five campuses across the UK, Dubai and Malaysia, and more than 10,000 students studying with us through partners and online. This role is focused on growing Heriot-Watt's educational offer and impact globally.Mark previously held the Vice-Principal and Provost role at HW (2020-24). This role focused on leading the delivery of the University strategy through a new, inclusive annual planning process he lead development of. He was also responsible for the 1000+ academy and research community through the Executive Deans he line managed. Mark lead on supporting the wellbeing of all colleagues across the institution, including through fostering an environment in which they can thrive and be successful. He also provided senior leadership in Heriot-Watt’s efforts to improve equality, diversity and inclusivity across it’s communities.Mark was previously Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Science & Technology at Nottingham Trent University (2018-2020), Dean of the School of Science at Loughborough (2014-18), and the Head of School of Chemical Engineering at Adelaide (2010-13). He has also held academic posts at Edinburgh, Surrey and Middlesex. Mark has also held a Visiting Professorship at Adelaide where he was the Professor of Chemical Engineering (2008-14), and was also a visiting lecturer at the University of Stuttgart (2000-2007).Mark has served as a non-Executive Director of multiple companies, including The BioCity Group, The Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity Ltd, and MTIF (BEZ) Ltd, the commercial arm of the Medical Technologies Innovation Facility established by NTU with co-funding from the D2N2 LEP. Mark has taught and continues to teach extensively across the fields of mechanical and chemical engineering, and mathematics. His research interests include protein adsorption, nanoporous carbons, flows in porous media, granular and multiphase flows. Applications include self-assembly, electrochemical energy storage and microfluidics. He has collaborated with colleagues in the US, China, Japan and Spain amongst other countries.Mark is a recipient of a Royal Academy of Engineering/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship, and is a Fellow of the IChemE & Chartered Engineer. He is a member of EPSRC's Peer Review College, and was a member of the ARC's College of Experts. Mark has held positions on the editorial boards of Scientific Reports and Chemical Engineering Science, and has guest edited for other leading journals.
