I was a special assistant to the Department Director, advising on communications and policy issues, political strategy and internal practices. Among my projects were editing or rewriting internal documents on options analysis and public relations, as well as beginning development of a new website highlighting the Utility's work on climate change.

As part of Mayor McGinn's team of senior advisors, I was responsible for developing and overseeing our strategic communications plan, managing a small team in the mayor's office and dotted-line oversight of public information officers throughout city government.

I was editor of this emerging online-only news site, coordinating coverage, recruiting and managing staff, editing content and producing the site.

I ran the local news operation, a desk of seven editors and about 40 reporters, and later added responsibility for business and sports coverage. In my tenure we changed priorities to focus on Seattle-centric news, added new coverage areas, restructured the newsroom and began a shift to Web-first reporting.

I edited the state government and political news out of Sacramento and later the local government, political and transportation coverage, with an emphasis on strong enterprise reporting.

I conceived, launched and ran this startup business that aggregated news reports across many topics, including politics, the environment, business, health and entertainment.

My reporting beats included four years in the Capitol bureau and four years as chief political reporter, followed by three years editing political coverage.
