Profile bio

About Mark O'Brien

My environmental career starts before the Rio Earth Summit in '92, working for the Australian Gov't on air and noise pollution, nuclear issues, waste management, recycling, circular economy and biodiversity. After conducting research into the application of renewable energy, distributed generation, micro-grids and battery technology, I have worked on climate change for 25+ years.I was working with Australia's energy and water sectors, helping major utilities develop their first carbon footprints and climate action plans, when the Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997. Contributing Author to the IPCC’s “Sinks Report” which operationalised nature-based solutions and the general understanding of land-based carbon sinks. Since 1999 operated successful climate change businesses, working with both private sector and Gov't clients.Beyond Neutral, established in 2007, provides climate consulting services and supplies high integrity carbon offsets. Technical advice covers climate change, renewable energy, energy efficiency and carbon sinks. Specialist knowledge includes carbon accounting (i.e footprints), climate action plans, emissions reporting (e.g. NGERS) and carbon offsets.I've provided impact assessments for major infrastructure, developed energy efficiency information and advised Gov't on inventory methodologies, assessing abatement and reporting requirements. Developed inventories and advice on waste and various industrial processes’ sectors for Australia's National Greenhouse Accounts.Decades of voluntary and mandatory emissions reporting and having been a verifier of both emissions reporting and carbon neutral accreditation helps - as evidenced by regular and successful audits of emissions reporting, including NGERS.First CEnvP Specialist (Climate Change) in Australia or NZ in 2015, recognising my “track record and experience in the field of climate change”. CEnvP (Certified Environmental Practitioner) since 2005. Awarded CEnvP of the Year in 2009 for my “outstanding contribution to environmental practice in recent years, particularly in the areas of carbon emission assessments and climate change mitigation”. Fellow of EIANZ.I was involved in one of, if not the world’s first avoided deforestation project using market mechanisms and verified emission reductions to stop forest destruction (saving 1.25 MtCO2e and 12,000 ha in Qld). Completed world’s first comprehensive case study of a feature film's carbon footprint, reducing its footprint and improving sustainability. This Australian film won an award for its minimal environmental impacts.

Listed skills include Climate Change, Carbon, Carbon Management, Sustainability, and 30 others.

Director

Carbon Pool Holdings P/L And Carbon Pool Management P/L

Sydney, Australia

Comprehensively involved with the successful completion of the Greenhouse Friendly™ accredited Avoided Deforestation project ("Minding the Carbon Store") in Queensland. Project prevented the release of about 1,250,000 tonnes of greenhouse emissions stored in the vegetation across more than 12 000 hectares. The project demonstrated that market mechanisms and verified emission reductions can stop forest destruction, provide low cost abatement and economic benefits to landholders. Project’s design and underpinning concepts are promoted internationally as a viable approach to reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD). Project utilised best practice design and satisfied Greenhouse Friendly™ requirements - permanence, leakage, additionality, verifiability, and buffers as risk management strategy. Project was a 2007 Banksia Award finalist and a 2007 United Nations Association of Australia Climate Change Award finalist.
