The role in this position was primarily to identify, develop and implement business development opportunities and to create long-term value from customers, markets and relationships. This included liaison with external service providers, industry associations and stakeholders. It also included Co-operating with all departments of Farstad Shipping, to assist in meeting their needs and working with relevant Farstad Corporate personnel to understand and support client requirements.Key AchievementsAchieved growth in Dynamic Positioning facility income in the region of 20% through development of external client relationships and increased provision of DP related consultancy services to Farstad Shipping and to external clients. Income of $1 million + was maintained throughout this period.Established FSOSC as preferred 3rd party DP subject matter experts with a number of clients in Australia. Services provided included DP Vessel evaluations, DP operational Audits, DP incident investigation, Verification of DP Competence and DP operational support.Farstad Shippings operational efficiency improved, by undertaking an extensive review of its DP Operational procedures. This consultative review with stakeholders led to the production and publication of an updated DP Operations Manual and associated procedural documents. Marketed and developed the client base for the “Offshore Crane Operator” training and Certification provision. This provision was taken up by numerous vessel operator and Oil & Gas clients and had an annual turnover of circa $500k Provided input to the “International Supply vessel Operators Association” (ISOA) DP expert group. Provided input to the Nautical Institutes DPTEG forum, as IDPOA representative. Acted as a member, and provided input to, various Nautical Institute DP working groups.
General Manager (Acting)
The role in this position was to maintain and grow the Farstad Offshore Simulation Centre as a world class Maritime Competence development and assessment Centre, following the resignation of the previous General Manager. It was a caretaker role until the appointment of a permanent General Manager.Key AchievementsDeveloped a strategic plan, business development plan and marketing strategy, to ensure advantage was taken of current and emerging opportunities, for the optimum utilisation of the centre facilities. This was the foundation of the achievements that followed above. Chief Dynamic Positioning (Dp) Instructor
The role of this position was to project manage the development of the Dynamic Positioning facility. This included design of teaching / technical areas, selection and purchase of DP equipment, production of training materials and selection / recruitment and training of instructor staff. Key AchievementsLed the development of the Farstad Shipping Dynamic Positioning (DP) training facility. It has generated circa $5 million income, with return on investment (ROI) of 325%. Its work has been instrumental in supporting Farstad Shipping to develop a commercial differentiation and has assisted in raising DP Competency levels, in general, in the Australasian region. Developed the required training programme and related materials to gain Nautical Institute DP training Centre Accreditation. Developed joint venture partnerships with Kongsberg Maritime (Singapore) and Rolls Royce in relation to the delivery of Dynamic Positioning technical training in Perth. Developed and delivered a curriculum that supplied compulsory and Continuous professional development courses to a variety of clients.Completed a DP Vessel Assurance project with Woodside Energy Ltd in connection with a major subsea project, that included a DP Verification of Competence process and a substantial amount of training from a 3rd party vessel operator.
Dynamic Positioning (Dp) Training Manager
The role of this position was to manage the DP Operators training scheme and responsibility for its administration and governance. This included Management of the Certificate issue process, leading the accreditation and re accreditation of Institute approved training centres, acting as Chairman of the DP stakeholder advisory group (DPTEG). The remit of DPTEG is to review and develop the Nautical Institute DP Operator training scheme. It seeks to make decisions and to implement actions to improve the Nautical Institute DP training scheme, including certification criteria, DPO competency and training support.Key Achievements Managed the Global Dynamic Positioning Industry Training & Certification scheme, at a time when the number of accredited Training Centres increased from 25 to 62 (+148%) and the number of certificates issued annually increased from approximately 500 to over 2000 (+300%). Successfully re-established the working relationship between the key Dynamic Positioning (DP) Industry stakeholders and led the development of the DP Industry Pan Global stakeholder Group, (DPTEG) together with the development of the associated Regional Training Providers Groups (RTP). Worked collaboratively with other Industry stakeholders on the inclusion of DP training and Certification into Part B Chapter V of the STCW code. This gave me a valuable insight into the workings of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Introduced standards for DP Instructors qualifications, experience and training, developed the framework for DP sea-time reduction training and put in place many of the aspects later adopted in the Institutes 2013 review of the DP Operators training scheme.

I was closely involved in various “Oil Major” audits and the approval of FenderCare by the Danish Maritime Authority. Noble Denton Consultants - Carried out Warranty surveys, CMID audits, Vessel suitability, and “On/Off” hire audits as a Marine Surveyor. Awarded Nautical Institute Accreditation for the DPTS “Leadership training programme”. Worked with Videotel Marine International on the following projects; Compilation of the question database for their Competency Management System, I was a member of the Ship Security review team. I was a member of the Development and production team of CBT training courses for Tanker Familiarisation, Oil tanker safety, Liquefied Gas Carrier safety & Chemical tanker safety. Consultancy services to Maritime Training (Plymouth) in respect of them being awarded Nautical Institute, Dynamic Positioning Centre accreditation.
