I was a lawyer at Gowling WLG (Canada) from 1988 until March 2023 and served as Managing partner for its Hamilton office from 2008 to 2011. In 2012 I took on the role of Leader, Innovation Initiatives.I was in active practice until 2021, focussing on mortgage remedies, creditors' rights and general insolvency. At the beginning of 2022 I narrowed my focus to working only on Innovation Programs with a particular interest in practice automation software for lawyers. I have designed systems that automate the Recovery Services practice at Gowling WLG and built additional practice systems in the areas of debt collection, loan placement and civil litigation. I've also contributed tools that helped the business run, particular on the compensation side.My retirement from the law business coincided almost exactly with the release of astonishingly capable Large Language Models and Generative AI tools. These tools will radically alter how legal services and products are packaged and delivered. Time will soon tell if I got out just on time or missed the really good part.
