Software is MagicThe fingers of my 12 year old self felt the sparkles of magic tingling when they typed random incantations at the DOS prompt of a trusty 386. Creating and shaping worlds at your fingertips. Wielding this magic became a passion that kindled interest in different topics like artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer graphics and -vision.Software is here to improve our livesAfter a decade of experience in software development, I started a PhD in speech synthesis in 2012. It was the advent of data-driven methods and employed them to develop speech technology for blind children. In our research we saw the strong effects of familiar and liked voices on attention and learning. I combined my software development experience with speech technology and built soft-realtime, streaming speech synthesis software for iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry and more. This led me to VocaliD where our software helped those living with speech disorders or loss of speech and allowed professional voice talent to scale their business through voice AI in a fair and equitable way. Since Deep Learning took the speech world by storm we are rushing through the uncanny valley with ever improving voice technology. Today I lead the Voice R&D efforts at Veritone and hope we can continue to make a positive impact on the world.I am a firm believer that software can improve our lives if we act responsible and foresighted. My master studies at the Medical University of Vienna has shown me the potential of software in the medical field. I worked on software for assessment of surgery results at the General Hospital of Vienna and on multimodal image registration of ophthalmologic images for laser-treatment of wet macular degeneration.My experiences also include embedded systems work for network-, energy- and building-monitoring as well as freelance projects in various other domains, from 3D visualization to eGovernment and web development. I have taught operating systems and distributed systems for a couple years and launched the housing search engine mygewo.at.
