Accountable for managing a team of engineers, urban designers and landscape architects to provide a Design Office that was the centre of excellence for the design of transport infrastructure in Auckland. The Design Office was a focal point for city planners, private developers and transport engineers to achieve positive urban design and mobility outcomes for the Auckland region.Established the design office as a business unit and developed a business plan for its ongoing operation.Developed a Microsoft Sharepoint/SAP environment for procurement and management of design and construction services. This required interaction with legal, financial and engineering teams to develop robust processes that satisfied the requirements of a diverse range of stakeholders.Introduced a tiered system of supplier panels for out-sourced design services to improve quality of service and reduce procurement costs.Improved the level of engagement between Auckland Transport and key external stakeholders such as Auckland Council and utility authorities.Key projects included Albert Street redevelopment, Karangahape Road enhancements, Mission Bay streetscape and Devonport Wharf redevelopment.

Engaged with users of the system and external stakeholders to ensure that requirements were clearly established and achieved.Continued to act as Project Manager for the Albany Highway North Upgrade (see below).

The project was nominated for the New Zealand Project Management Institute Project of the Year award.Developed the project business case and project documentation, including a successful CEO level review of the business case as the project moved from design to implementation.Employed lean engineering techniques to deliver the project 7 months ahead of schedule and within project budget.Managed a communications plan that included engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, from organisation executives to private landowners.Included installation and commissioning of eight signalised intersections.

Melbourne, Australia

Accountable for the engineering function in a multi-disciplinary consultancy delivering land development projects in Victoria, Australia.Worked closely with council, infrastructure authorities and private developers to plan and deliver new infrastructure for urban growth areas.Implemented a restructure of the engineering division to reduce costs by approximately 20%.Developed a Microsoft Sharepoint document management system and workflows for quality management in a multi-disciplinary land development consultancy. Included integration with Total Synergy, the company’s ERP software.

Co-ordinated the planning, design and construction of roads, drainage, utility services and public open space for residential developments ranging from inner city townhouses to 300-lot greenfields estates.

Led a team of traffic engineers and operations personnel to manage traffic operations in the Auckland Region on a 24/7 basis.Responsible for the development of a state-of-the-art Traffic Operations Centre for Auckland, with a project budget of NZD 7 million. Included a data center with fire suppression and uninterruptible power supply, a CCTV camera control system and a building security system.Development of the traffic operations center also required the analysis and improvement of operational processes, followed by the development of information systems based on Microsoft SQL Server and document management/workflows in Sharepoint. Historical information was transformed into a more process-oriented format that could be easily searched for and retrieved in an intranet environment.Managed the implementation of tunnel fire and safety control systems including fire suppression, ventilation, emergency lighting, uninterruptible power supply, electronic signage and access control.Managed intelligent transportation systems projects including traffic signal optimisation, bus signal priority, development of a fiber optic telecommunications network and provision of traveller information systems.Represented the Agency in community engagement and media liaison for major traffic management events.

Part of the project management team for development of a data warehouse for traffic information on New Zealand’s highways.The data warehouse was developed on an SQL platform, with a web-based user interface. An XML based API was also developed to distribute data to authorised third parties.Responsible for requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing and handover.Required transformation of data from varied sources, development of algorithms to calculate key performance metrics, and aggregation of data to allow faster reporting from business intelligence tools.
