President and Chief Architect of a small software research and development startup company. Combining multiple disparate technologies such as the NIST Real-time Control System (RCS), ontologies, artificial intelligence, simulation, and systems dynamics modeling to develop novel techniques and tools for semantic web, ontologies, knowledge management, data fusion, security and control systems. Developed several proposals in response to US government SBIR RFPs. Designs are based on industry standards such as the RCS version 4 Reference Management Architecture (RCS4/ RMA), the W3C Web Ontology Language (OWL), J2EE, XML, and RDF.

Conducted multiple project assessments and training sessions on a short-term basis for several clients and internal projects. Application areas included bioinformatics, telecommunications, defense, and e-commerce. Assessments and training were focused on software development process using the Rational Unified Process, requirements analysis, architecture and design. This included architecture and process assessments for the RCSB Protein Data Bank project, data base trade study for Bio Meriaux, and architecture definition for Icon MediaLab’s Intranet product.

Developed high-level business process model for US Bank Home Mortgage. Worked with BA team and business line stakeholders in identifying and defining 91 business processes used in third party loan origination, client management, product management, rate management, and loan funding. Defined a consistent set of common business entities and standard states for the major entities. Developed templates, patterns, examples, and approaches for identifying and gathering information about business processes, requirements, business rules, use cases, activity flows, business entities, business events, and states. Defined and built structure to consolidate, integrate, and publish all of the requirements information in a shared repository using Enterprise Architect (v8). Provided initial guidance on iterative development approach.

Defined and deployed a new sofware development lifecycle (SDLC) for use by all software projects in the enterprise. The SDLC consisted of a combination of RUP, Scrum, Lean, and XP concepts integrated into an overall framework, coordinated with the major stakeholders and support organizations, and tailorable to meet the needs of an individual project. Developed and customized training material and provided training to several project and support teams. Coached and mentored multiple projects with successful focus on project success and knowledge transfer. Facilitated initial project planning and execution as Scrum Master, transitioning that role to other project team members as their competencies developed. Initial project progress and success of a pilot (data warehouse) project demonstrated a substantial improvement over Safeway's prior projects. The SDLC was defined in a business process model (BPMN and UML in Enterprise Architect), a development case, and a method sketch, then implemented in Rational Method Composer (RMC), following IconATG's Method Development Process (MDP). Reviewed and customized activities, tasks, roles, work products, and practices covering all RUP-defined disciplines.

(via IconATG) Performed requirements and systems analysis for a systems reengineering effort for Blue Shield of California's public website in conjunction with a major upgrade of core information systems. This included development of use cases, use case models, business rules, and supporting requirements for member, employer, producer, provider, and administrator portals. Reviewed, commented on, and updated a large number of project-related artifacts, facilitated and participated in many review sessions, and coordinated feedback from all stakeholders.

Worked on projects for loan origination, international business reporting, portfolio and project management, contract billing, and customer-specific enhancements. Worked with various vendors, developers, and internal subject matter experts, to provide detailed specifications for three inter-related projects - a scalable wellness incentive program, integration of multiple third-party platforms, and a nation-wide discount program, for the employer and member portals. Defined long-term vision and guidance to support a multi-release, multi-year implementation. The model was developed in UML, based on Eriksson-Pinker Extensions, and maintained in an Enterprise Architect shared repository. Developed the majority of the model which was focused on the product development lifecycle, consisting of over 9000 business entities representing goals, processes, activities, events, artifacts, artifact states, information systems, use cases, domain elements and links to related corporate- and industry-standards and other supporting documentation. Defined and developed a common model structure used to represent various aspects of the business. Provided significant contribution to the development of the overall Business Process Management approach. Provided guidance and feedback to over 20 process design teams in the specification of consistent, concise, and accurate business process definitions, corresponding model representations, and other related artifacts. Developed higher-level business process definitions from available corporate documentation to provide common context. Developed, or assisted in development of, training materials, style guides, checklists, model add-ons/extensions, project plans, business practices, and compliance documents. Provided numerous executive and technical presentations and model walkthroughs, as well as publishing an HTML version of the model on a regular basis.

This project included integration with existing legacy systems, 4 existing web portals (member, group, broker, and administration), modification of existing business processes, as well as significant enhanced supporting capabilities (reporting, user support, and notifications) for Health Net's membership and accounting, web support, system administration, and sales organizations, as well as external broker agents. Developed use cases and related artifacts for 3 project phases as a member of a team of 4 analysts. Facilitated use case and inspection sessions with Subject Matter Experts (business and technical), reviewed user interfaces, transitioned deliverables to the development and testing organizations, reviewed designs and test plans, and created template artifacts for use on future projects. Mentored internal analysts in use case development and methodology. Provided guidance related to Sarbanes/Oxley, security, and financial auditing compliance.

(via IconATG) Provided mentoring to multiple software development teams the following software development processes: SCRUM, project management, use case development, systems analysis and design, UML modeling, UI design, testing, and deployment for the implementation of multiple web-based applications. Provided (or assisted with) formal training in SCRUM, use case development, and iterative testing. Led sessions developing the use case model survey, product backlog, sprint backlogs, and sprint planning. Reviewed all artifacts, led artifact reviews and led the team through their first SCRUM sprints. Covad had acquired a small VoIP provider and this project was to integrate the two companies and automate the processes to economically scale the Operations Support Systems (OSS) and their usage. Performed full lifecycle support including specific responsibilities for business needs analysis, product definition, business process definition, business unit coordination (Finance, Sales, Marketing, Provisioning, Operations, etc.), system requirements specification, project management, development and testing support, product testing, user acceptance testing, product rollout, end-user training, and production support. Implemented a process involving both Scrum and use cases, facilitated several requirements sessions, mentored analysis team on use case and requirements development, coordinated efforts of multiple development teams (on-shore and off-shore), developed a large number of UML models (using MagicDraw), reviewed and contributed to designs, developed test cases, and reviewed test plans. The system developed was a combination of internal and COTS software packages, integrated with a BEA WebLogic-based ESB architecture.
