All American Girls: The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, published by Simon& Schuster, Deadly Little Secrets, women's fiction/suspense novel published 12/13. At MarlaMiller.com, I shepherd authors on the road to publication. Since the start of the #covid19 pandemic, I've launched WritersMama ZOOM Read & Critique workshops, an option now that writers conferences are on hold indefinitely. I teach annually at The Santa Barbara Writers Conference, The Southern California Writers Conference and have presented workshops at Writers Digest Conference. My experience in writing for publication spans 25+ years. When I started on my own road, I was an academic/psychiatric RN practitioner with three small kids. Today, my work melds my teaching/mentoring/interviewing expertise with my writing/publishing/platform building life expertise.I am a writer/editor/ writing workshop facilitator whose MarketingtheMuse workshops are well received by writers at every level. I am 'With author' for two indie published books-one in fitness and the other in health care. My professional expertise in both areas make me a good match for these projects. I appreciate new options in e-publishing however I've also noted that some think it's easy to be a writer. There are no shortcuts to mastering craft. Folks may not want to hear this but I tell it as I see it, which is why you like my style or you don't. People may get their works out there easier but they won't be read by more than a few. Poor storytelling reads like poor storytelling. Specialties: Writing short effective script: A skill set honed during my 20 years of writing columns for the Orange County Register's lifestyle magazine Finding story: My Read & Critique editing service zooms in on helping writers 'sculpt' their story. Testimonials on MarlaMiller.com offers solid evidence of this skill. I am a solid interviewer with excellent communication skills. My understanding of platform building is solid. I have an innate ability to translate complex into simple, a skill honed during my nursing career.

Workshop Teacher, Marketing Strategies For WritersMarlamiller.Com Jun 2003 - PresentSanta Barbara, California AreaWhen teaching workshops, my focus is always on 'openings'-the first 2 pages of a manuscript, the Overview of a book proposal, the query letter--all introductions to authors' writings. If you can't hook your reader here, you won't hook them. I love interactive workshops so always invite my attendees to bring 'openings' for us to critique, which we always do through the lens of 'marketability'--If you hook the reader through your 'openings' chances of your work being read/sold improves.

Santa Barbara Writers Conference Writing Workshop LeaderSanta Barbara Writers Conference, Workshop Leader Jun 2003 - PresentSanta Barbara, California AreaThe gist of my work in writing workshops: hooking readers with compelling openings, social media strategies - like blogging content to spin off stories - and query letters that hook.I became incensed after Simon & Schuster did little to nothing except publish my book that starred the 1999 US Women's National Soccer Team, a book endorsed by the team. It's not enough to write well, not today in 2015 nor was it yesterday, except few of us knew that back then. We were too busy bowing and scraping to the publishing juggernauts that finally let us in. And they knew it. After licking my wounds for a few years, I designed this workshop and have been teaching it @ SBWC, my literary home since 1989.

Assistant DirectorSanta Barbara Writers Conference 2005 - 2008Everything from establishing a Young Writers Program -that we created a fundraising platform for - to inviting scads of literary agents to attend SBWC which at that time, hosted about 40 agents every year. Lots of work that was constant/intense 6 months prior to each summer conference.

Workshop LeaderSanta Barbara Writers Conference, 2003-Present Jun 2003 - PresentSanta Barbara, CaliforniaNot sure why I missed adding this..or did I somewhere here? SBWC is my literary home that took root when I attended my first conference in 1989, a knee-knocking novice writer in the company of greats like Ray Bradbury and Barnaby Conrad and Sue Grafton and Fannie Flagg and Charles Schulz and Elmore Leonard and....you get my drift..I was hooked!

Writers Resource Center With Emphasis On Social Media Strategies & Hooking ReadersMarlamiller.Com - Marketingthemuse Jan 2003 - PresentWeb & Real Time-Sbwc & ScwcMarketingtheMuse was founded in 2003 when I first taught writers marketing strategies I learned-or didn't- when my first book was published by Simon & Schuster. Back then, we were on the brink of a new epublishing age that is now considered mainstream. My focus has shifted to hooking readers and social media strategies useful to authors. I also help good storytellers find the right small press or literary agent.

Deadly Little SecretsMarketingthemuse Publications May 2013 - Jul 2020Montecito Ca.The year is 1985 in Deadly Little Secrets, a story about taking sides and playing dirty. Though a work of fiction, in many communities the issue of AIDS education in public high schools is still the hot button it was back when HIV first took hold and this story takes place. The political divide clearly demarcated now was just beginning to ‘crack’ in many communities resembling Corona Cove, the upscale seaside town turned sideways by deep-seated differences in religious beliefs. Though that battle shifts allegiances in her home town, that’s not what threatens to sever the lifelong friendship between school nurse Loretta Casterini and Dr Julia Brooks, both mothers of teens at the school. Loretta is on the defense; she can’t help it. She co-teaches the sex ed class and does a bang up job if you’re pardon the pun. She's not naive; she recognizes the ugly truths about the evil that prejudice spawns. What Loretta can’t wrap her mind around is how a woman as accomplished as Julia Brooks can turn a blind eye to the machinations of the man they’ve both known since high school, school board president Steven Wilcox. Julia’s devotion is unworthy and next to impossible for Loretta to understand. When Loretta discovers that Julia is still under his spell, in the midst of mayhem caused by the AIDS course brouhaha, she wonders for the frist time just how well she knows her best friend since fifth grade. Loretta is certain, knows Wilcox will turn the AIDS sex ed course into a public battleground to expand his footprint in the political arena. She also is certain of this: If her best friend sides with him, Loretta can no longer be Julia’s friend and that possibility heightens Loretta's fears regarding the extent some will go to get what they want.

Writers Digest Conference/WestWriters Digest Conference/West Sep 2013 - Aug 2014Los Angeles, Ca.Pitch Witch is a useful workshop I co-facilitate/teach with editor/film maker Jennifer Silva Redmond at several writers conferences. we tell writers "You get two opinions for the price of one" which in this business is a very good thing. Why? Writers are vulnerable and tend to take one person's viewpoint as gospel.
