I believe learning and education are necessary to develop functioning citizens in our society. Everyone continues to learn throughout their lives, perhaps not through organized educational facilities, but from the myriad of experiences we encounter. As teachers, it is our job to create safe, nurturing environments where emphasis is not only put on reaching academic success, but also on realizing that failures are just as important in our learning process. Providing the typical education: reading, writing and arithmetic, to our children is important, but the skill of learning how to think and to question is much more valuable. As Galileo professed, “You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him find it within himself.” I believe this quote sums up the importance of learning and education, as well as my philosophy on the subject. As teachers, we merely are the hand that guides children to explore, question and, ultimately, learn for themselves.
