In her many years of experience, her keen and winning strategies leading to messaging that helped to put many brands on the map, and on the shelf by winning the hearts and minds of consumers by pushing the limits of media technologies. Martha made the cover of Adweek as ADWEEK ALL-STAR and has won the esteemed Radio Mercury Award for Boston Globe, and other industry awards including New York One Show Gold Pencils, LA Belding Awards, Best of Broadcast New England, Best of Show Sandi San Diego Awards and others for her pointed and often whimsical writing. • Phillips Ramsey
    Senior Copywriter
    Phillips Ramsey Jan 1981 - Jan 1983
    San Diego
Phillips Ramsey San Diego and Phoenix, which were later bought by the InterPublic Group, hired me to work on San Diego County Water Authority and the San Diego County Health Department, right out of Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Center for Coastal Studies. A water crisis in Southern California prompted the County to call for extreme water conservation. A complete water audit of Southern California was completed and Martha Shaw wrote a 500-page report on the situation. Upon condensing all this information into an award-winning 10-page brochure exploring the options, from dams to desalination to conservation and reclamation, she was hired as a copywriter for the agency that had the account, Phillips Ramsey. This turned into a public campaign to save water, coupled with water literacy that became an icon. Followling this came her campaign for the Health Department "Are you dying for a cigarette?" which won her accolades. Quickly put on other accounts for her witty copy, she won another award for WD-40, "If it moves, shoot it." The next call was from Chiat/Day, which was arguably the most creative agency in the nation. Along with the position came a top salary, launching a career in global agencies through 1999, when eFlicks Media was founded to put video on the internet. Now called Earth Advertising. As a scientist from an engineering education, Martha had the technical savvy to push the media delivery systems into a new era.
  • State Of California Department Of Fish And Game
    Marine Fisheries Biologist
State Of California Department Of Fish And Game May 1977 - May 1978
    San Diego
Coming off a college job as a scuba diver at the University of New Hampshire Jackson Marine Laboratory, I was selected as the first of two women divers to be hired in the history of the State of California. My area of responsibility was the kelp beds off Southern California that were being used by fisheries and by the kelp company, Kelco, to harvest kelp. The equilibrium of the ecosystem began to topple early in the century when otters were hunted out, leaving no predators for the sea urchins, now overpopulated, threatening to destroy the kelp. I helped to create markets for the harvest of urchins, while setting up transects on the seafloor for a census of sea life. Meanwhile Kelco, who had been granted harvest rights to the kelp beds, began dumping quicklime onto the beds to kill the urchins. My position included monitoring Kelco. On land, I took inventory of sportfishing catch, and accompanied the big tuna boats (Starkist, Bumblebee) to monitor and assess the catch. Included was accompanying the lobster boats. We also monitored and pulled illegal traps along the coast and in the San Diego Harbor. Having been trained by Navy Seals and been certified by the State of California to 250 feet, I levered this job into one at Scripps, with the recommendation of Jim Stewart, the State's dive master.
