When the initial Emergency Phase of a disaster shifts to the Recovery Phase, we at the Fortunate Blessings Foundation deploy our amazing, unique Second Response Trauma Teams, trained mental health professionals, to serve individuals in the areas that were most severely impacted. As soon as a sense of stability and safety returns, we bring our experience to support anyone concerned with the emotional issues that can cause more serious problems just a few months later. We know that unless the physical energies that accompany deeply repressed emotions are addressed sensitively, a life-long burden of complex psychosomatic issues can result. We feel it is vitally important to distinguish our body-centered work from the capable and well-meaning counseling that is usually provided to traumatized children.We have two goals: our first aim is to prevent and reduce children's post-traumatic stress-related symptoms, depressive symptoms, somatic complaints, functional impairment, separation anxiety and generalized anxiety; secondly, we want to build capacity on the ground so that future events can be met with similar, effective responses by local caregivers.
