Rural Microfinance Development Centre Ltd. (RMDC) is an apex wholesale microfinance organization in Nepal lending to retail microfinance organizations such as microfinance development banks, financial intermediary non-governmental organizations (FI-NGOs) and cooperatives, which are providing credit to the poor and the deprived, with a large focus on women.RMDC's main objectives are:1) Providing wholesale funds to microfinance institutions (MFIs) for on-lending to the poor, especially women.2) Building and strengthening the institutional capacity of both partner and potential MFIs3) Providing technical support and improving organizational capacities and skills of its clients and their borrowers.During my internship, I conducted an impact study on the effects of excessive lending to multiple clients by microfinance institutions (MFIs) on both clients and MFIs (Central Nepal region). The study involved the following:- Setting up the theoretical framework and questionnaires- Examining the MFI's loan application and approval process (predominantly group-methodology based lending)- Conducting field research by observing centre meetings, interviewing centre chiefs, MFI staff and branch officers on the one hand, and collecting and analyzing MFI clients'​ socio-economic and financial data through interviews- Mapping the incidence of clients with loans from multiple MFIs- Assessing the underlying causes of excessive credit supply and loan utilization of MFI clients- Examining the consequences of excessive credit supply resulting in over indebtedness on micro and macro level- Presenting the report with policy implications to the RMDC board

The database contains datasets of hundreds of household surveys that are connected and harmonized. It currently contains information on over 20 million persons in 110 countries from all regions of the developing world. My contribution to the DDW involved the following:- Aggregating and analyzing the data from the household surveys into variables (socio-economic and those related to educational participation ) at district level- Generating a database on IMF programs and their specific characteristics linked to the countries available from the household surveys- Conducting a cross-country investigation of the impact of IMF programs on schooling in developing countries
