About Martin Pearce

I am a palynologist / biostratigrapher with 22 years’ experience in the acquisition, assessment, interpretation and integration of global palaeontological datasets from the upper Paleozoic to Recent from Alaska, Algeria, Australia, Barents Sea, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Greenland, Gulf of Mexico, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Nigeria, North Sea, Norwegian Sea, Senegal, Spain, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Tunisia, UK, Venezuela, West Atlantic Margin, West of Ireland, West of Shetlands, Yemen. I spent a decade as a principal geologist at Statoil ASA (now Equinor Energy AS) in Norway and the USA. My specialisation is the biostratigraphy of the UK Atlantic margin, North Sea (UKCS and NOCS) to Barents Sea, where I have worked on ca. 250 wells. I have considerable analytical experience of the palynology of the Late Triassic to Recent of NW Europe, and have published extensively on Cretaceous sequences with 31 peer-reviewed papers, many including work on GSSP sections in the UK, Germany, Poland and Spain. I also have significant experience of the Paleocene to Jurassic palynology and palynofacies of the Middle East. I have officially supervised two Ph.D. students to completion, and supported many Ph.D. and M.Sc. students in the UK, The Netherlands and Poland. I am also supporting lithostratigraphic and mapping projects on Cenomanian-Turonian and Santonian-Campanian sequences in Canada. I am a regular reviewer for numerous international journals and a past recipient of the Charles Downie Award for best paper from a Ph.D thesis. I was an editor for the Journal of Micropalaeontology for 6 years, and have been a visiting research fellow at Kingston University London. I am currently a director of the biostratigraphic consultancy Evolution Applied Ltd, and am the founder and lead Designated Partner of Palaeo7 LLP. In 2022 I was honoured to be invited to become a Scientific Associate at the Natural History Museum in London. I am open to new opportunities, collaboration and employment.

  • Statoil Llc
    Principal Geologist
    Statoil Llc Oct 2010 - Apr 2013
    Houston, Texas Area
I relocated to our Houston office for a 2-year expatriate assignment to support the exploration effort across the entire US Gulf of Mexico. Roles include the acquisition, assessment, interpretation and integration of nanno- and micropalaeontological data and the management of biostratigraphic consultants at wellsite and I provided support to teams from prospect identification/evaluation, maturation to eventual drilling and, during drilling, was in a core team making critical operational decisions. At the end of my assignment, I accepted an offer to stay on for an additional seven months. This was initially a challenging project for me as I had no prior knowledge of the GoM petroleum system, but was expected to provide support from day one. To help my work in this new area, I developed lookup tables (based on excel ‘logic’ formulae and Microsoft visual basic macros) to instantly compare multiple bioevent schemes, calculate statistics, plot time vs depth charts and automatically calculate (post-compaction) sedimentation rate curves. These became particularly useful as stratigraphic prediction tools in active exploration wells, and in reporting to exploration teams.
  • Millennia Stratigraphic Consultants Limited
    Consultant Palynologist
Millennia Stratigraphic Consultants Limited Apr 2001 - Jan 2004
    United Kingdom
Following my doctoral research, I joined Millennia Stratigraphic Consultants Limited as a palynologist, focusing on international projects. Studies included single and multi-wells projects both in the office and offshore at wellsite, including routine chrono- and lithostratigraphic interpretations, and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions (based on spore and pollen eco-groupings, dinocyst palaeoenvironmental models and kerogen palynofacies). The following is a summary of the intervals covered:Northwest Europe: Anglo-Paris Basin: Upper Triassic (Rhaetian), Upper Jurassic (Portlandian) and Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian–Coniacian); Danish Basin: Upper Cretaceous–Lower Paleogene (Maastrichtian–Danian);Northern North Sea and Norwegian sector: Triassic–Neogene (Rhaetian–Pliocene);Southern North Sea Basin: Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian–lower Maastrichtian);West of Ireland: Lower Jurassic–Lower Paleogene (Hettangian–Danian).South America: Venezuela: Neogene (Miocene).North Africa: Tunisia: hotshot biostratigraphy of Upper Triassic and Upper Cretaceous outcrops'Middle East / Asia: Iran: Upper Cretaceous–Lower Paleogene, including palynofacies of outcrop samples; Oman: biostratigraphy and palynofacies of Upper Cretaceous outcrop samples;Pakistan: Upper Cretaceous–Lower Paleogene (Maastrichtian–Danian);Yemen: Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous (Tithonian–Albian).
