I founded a nonprofit to provide first-gen and low-income students with free writing and editing support. I serve as the editor, freelance writer, tutor, college essay advisor, and career + college and graduate school readiness counselor.

My summer fellowship at Friday, a social impact and organizational development firm, is education-focused. We work with institutions and businesses to rethink traditional systems, create new learning experiences, and ensure the promise of quality education. My client projects include working with the Higher Ed Equity Network and Complete College America.

During the novel coronavirus lockdown measures, I used this time to work with a career coach, participate in a year-long professional advancement online training course, and offer pro bono services to the How To College Podcast and US-UK Fulbright Commission.

I mentored the college scholars through career and academic enrichment opportunities, and several went on to pursue their dream internship, fresh-out-of-college job, or doctoral program.

With a keen interest in working more directly with young people, I traveled to the rural region of Nkomazi, about a six-hour drive southeast of Johannesburg, to intern with a selective academic mentorship and merit-based afterschool program serving high school-aged scholars.As a youth development advisor, I interned with Imagine Scholar to deliver a series of presentations and workshops. I enjoyed teaching the cohorts of scholars public speaking, career mapping, and debate skills. It was such a privilege to work with talented and ambitious students.

The conclusion of the IDEX fellowship presented me with an exciting opportunity to pursue a stint with Ador Group, so I joined their incubated start-up as a digital marketing manager. I helped lead a team of consultants, web developers, and marketing professionals to launch a personal care store for online shopping. I advised the sales strategies for partnerships with Amazon and Google.

This fellowship led me to work on social innovation projects such as corporate social responsibility and corporate sustainability. In addition, I spearheaded a women’s empowerment initiative and volunteered to spread awareness about reproductive health among low-income women.I was a recipient of the highly competitive InvestWISE Scholarship which fully funded the IDEX Fellowship tuition for young women interested in working in India’s social entrepreneurship sector.

The most common question I get asked is, why India?The answer as to why I chose India, of all places, is as simple as it is complex or rather confounding. Put simply, I learned about the education crisis in India through my undergraduate coursework in intercultural communication; a problem that needed solutions; and rather than read about a country in the pages of a textbook or tune into stories on the news, I wanted to understand the issues of poverty and education on the ground in a city like Mumbai, firsthand and in a practical sense. A professor at my alma mater connected me to a nonprofit in Mumbai, Atma, and I joined their team as a program associate and executive assistant to the chief operations officer. I enjoyed the work, advising founders of schools and nonprofits to help them design and implement accelerator models and develop strategic plans for sustainable growth. And I learned a lot about innovation and assessing impact in the field of education in an emerging economy.

I served as a program coordinator with the International Visitor & Training Programs team, organizing and hosting, and accompanying international visitors for projects including "American Corners: Partners in Public Diplomacy" with a hand-selected cohort of Iraqi librarians and "African Women's Entrepreneurship Program" a special cohort of businesswomen from sub-Saharan African countries.My academic internship (the previous summer) with World Oregon was fully funded by the Deborah Olsen Public Service Scholarship.
