Martin's engineering career began at an automotive factory in Bolton, where he had to learn all the dynamics of the automotive manufacturing. As a fabrications engineer Martin covered a variety of roles within a business unit, manufacturing fabricated skip loader and hook loader equipment which were also fitted to commercial vehicles.Martin was ultimately offered the factory manager job at the age of 25, which he declined to pursue software engineering.

Martin joined on a one-year contract to implement an SPC system.
