About Dr. Martin Brown M.

Martin is an insightful and skilled professional with over 10 years of experience in diverse fields, including the policy, governance and development domains of climate change and disaster resilience and sustainable development. He has studied, lived and worked in Africa, Europe and Asia, and has a track record in developing and managing a wide range of development and research projects - working for, and with big/small, NGO/governmental, for-profit and not-for-profit organisations. He thrives in intellectually stimulating, multicultural environments and multidisciplinary teams, and cherishes opportunities to think about and deliver novel solutions to environmental, social and economic challenges. He is passionate about capacity development and governance processes/approaches for socioeconomic progress. He loves working/conversing with people (whether under a tree in a remote village somewhere in Africa, or in a conference/workshop in an Asian metropolis, or just a casual chat about things over whatever drink in a London joint). This has led him into all manner of adventures, like developing and managing innovative projects and organisations (yes!); community organising; running/facilitating conferences and workshops; mobilising resources for NGOs; designing and executing leadership mentorship; and successfully developing and launching innovative tools such as the Community-Based Conflict Early Warning and Early Response System (CB-CEWERS) - used to monitor and trigger response to potential violence in some of Kenya's most conflict-prone areas during the 2010 referendum and the 2013 general elections in Kenya.Martin has founded and/or co-founded, and led several organisations furthering development, peace, and effective democratic governance in Africa (e.g. Peace & Development Forum, Maendeleo Institute and the African Development Resources and Capacities Institute - ADRECI). He is a (2014) Commonwealth Scholar, and member of the RADIX (Radical Interpretation of Disasters) Group. He loves to talk ideas, so get in touch.

  • Grantham Research Institute On Climate Change & The Environment
    Doctoral Researcher
Grantham Research Institute On Climate Change & The Environment Sep 2018 - Aug 2023
    London, United Kingdom
I completed a PhD in Environmental Policy and Development. In my thesis titled "Transboundary Climate and Adaptation Risk Governance", I explored the transboundary dimensions of both climate change and climate response measures. I examined transboundary climate and adaptation risks/impacts at different scales and levels, with sub-global interests in the East and Horn of Africa. I employed a mixed methods approach while developing and utilising political economy, social contracts, sociospatial and (ex)territorial imaginaries, as well as adaptive governance perspectives to understand risk conceptualisation, risk creation, and risk governance within and beyond different types of boundaries. My research demonstrated the absence of transboundary considerations in the management of climate change - a very transboundary challenge. It also highlighted with empirical evidence the limitations and dangers of purely 'local responses' to climate change. Besides these, I provided some suggestions for transboundary considerations to enable more holistic approaches in the adaptation cycle, including risk assessment, policy and programmatic design and implementation, evaluation, and safeguarding against transboundary risks. I have presented my work in over a dozen academic and non-academic forums, and hope to continue sharing these insights with all stakeholders interested in sustainable development and resilience, just transitions and equitable adaptation, and the whole real of climate justice. But the overall message I emphasise is that climate response initiatives and policies can be harmful beyond where they are implemented, and this needs to be taken seriously at all scales and levels. We have a lot of tools we can use to do good well.
  • Dai
Government/Community Mediator - Countering Violent Extremism (Niwetu)
    Dai Sep 2017 - Aug 2018
    Kenya
I was contracted to support the implementation of the NIWETU Project as an Independent Consultant. The Kenya NiWajibu Wetu (NIWETU) project was launched by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to reduce violent extremism among at-risk individuals and communities in Kenya. “NiWajibu Wetu” is a Kiswahili phrase meaning, “It’s our responsibility,” and is inspired by verse two of the Kenya National Anthem and the 2010 Constitution of Kenya. The activity aims to empower communities and government institutions to take the lead in preventing/countering violent extremism (P/CVE). NIWETU works to address the root causes of violent extremism by fostering a sense of unity and tolerance among individuals, communities, and civil society groups, as well as catalyze their connections with government institutions at the county and national levels. NIWETU will run from 2016 to 2020.
