Mary Fedor currently serves Geneva 304 as the middle school librarian at Geneva Middle School South.Her degrees include a BA in Elementary Education from Aurora University; an MA in Reading from Aurora University, where she earned certification as a K-12 reading specialist and focused her research on data-based decision making; and an MEd from National Louis University in Curriculum & Instruction with Advanced Professional Specializations in Teacher Leader and K-12 School Library.Mary is known for the caring climate she fosters with students and staff. She often sponsors collections or projects to involve the school community in being a comfort to others or in solving real-life problems. She is proud of a partnership she and the guidance team set up that was featured on the district website. Using bibliotherapy, the concept that reading can have a beneficial effect on mental health, Mary uses Social-Emotional Learning topics and other difficult topics for students in order to pull books and create displays. This can help take the stigma away from tough subject matter and/or open up conversations with students.When the pandemic paved a difficult path for students, Mary introduced a Library Student Advisor concept at South to connect with the students. Students may join every morning before school from 8:00-8:30 to advise, help out, or learn something new. Free breakfast is offered. For recreation, Mary reads, participates in several online communities dedicated to education, works on small home projects, and attends the sporting events of her youngest child who is in high school.
