Ms. Mason is a thought leader and senior attorney in the Justice Department’s Constitutional Torts Section. In that capacity, she defends the United States, its agencies and individual officers in federal district courts and courts of appeal across the country as well as the United States Supreme Court. Ms. Mason has represented and personally counseled individuals at all levels of government from Cabinet officials to line-level officers. She is an expert on a wide variety of constitutional, federal statutory and civil rights, national security, immigration, policing, and international law issues, and has been lead counsel and supervisor in a remarkable number of high-profile cases.During her tenure with the Department, Ms. Mason also represented the DHHS in over 75 bench trials in the Court of Federal Claims, many of which involved novel questions of fact and required extensive use of medical and other experts. Ms. Mason advises, counsels and trains stakeholders throughout government and in the private sector and is a regular instructor at the Justice Department’s National Advocacy Center.Ms. Mason is the recipient of many awards, most recently a Justice Department dedicated service award in 2022. Ms. Mason has received the Michael F. Hertz Memorial Award for Exceptional Performance and Outstanding Professionalism, one of the Civil Division’s highest awards presented by AG Holder. Ms. Mason is also the recipient of multiple Special Commendation Awards over her career. In addition, she received Special Achievement Awards each year from 1991-1992, 1998 to 2013, and 2014 to 2023, and annual Meritorious Service Awards from 1993-1997. Ms. Mason has lead many litigation teams over the years, including one which received the Secretary’s Award from DHHS, the agency's highest award from then-Secretary Shalala.
