I had the opportunity to complete my food service placement at the Mater Hospital at Southbank. Here I was tasked with determining the role food satisfaction influences nutritional intake across Mater Hospital South Brisbane campuses. I achieved this by utilising the Acute Care Hospital Foodservice Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire, to assess satisfaction with the food service system provided at Mater Hospital and compared this to recorded nutritional intake.

I completed my public Health placement at OzHarvest. I had the opportunity to develop a 6-week program, which targeted the needs of a seniors living within the community. This program focused on addressing malnutrition and provided simple education session focusing on improving nutritional intake, bone and muscle maintenance, the use of food fortification, tips for eating when not hungry and food safety and sustainability. Furthermore, whilst I was at OzHarvest I was able to participate in the existing Nutrition Education Skills Training and engaged in the cooking and education sessions.

I completed my Medical Nutrition Therapy 2 placement at John Flynn Hospital. At John Flynn I worked across all wards, including oncology, general medicine, orthopaedic, surgical and rehabilitation. Here I worked on refining my knowledge of the nutrition care process, I focused on familiarising myself with different nutrition care guidelines and developed my skills in working in a multidisciplinary team.

During my time in Mackay, I had the opportunity to work across three different services which they offer to the community. I spent my first two weeks working in the Community and Mental Health facility. Here I worked with individuals living with mental illness, several of whom had cognitive disabilities. I spent the remaining three weeks with my time split between the CHATS and MBH. CHATS is a community-based program that predominantly focuses on outpatient rehabilitation, here I grew my understanding on working with individuals living in the community who were malnourished. At MBH I worked across all wards but spent most of my time in the general medical ward. This exposed me to individuals with a variety of chronic diseases and allowed me to grow my foundational knowledge.
