Mary Vogel is Visiting Professor in Sociology at the University of California at Berkeley. She was Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Study of Law and Society, 2020-21, and Visiting Professor in Legal Studies, Spring 2022.Dr. Vogel was born and grew up near New York City. Since 2001, she has lived mostly in Bloomsbury, London. Mary moved there to accompany her partner, the late American sculptor Tony Long, who worked in Paris and Graz.Mary’s research focuses on a series of interconnected interests within the fields of democracy, law and social ordering. She has won Leverhulme Trust and British Academy funding for a new book on origins of plea bargaining in England. Her work has received awards from the Law and Society Association and the American Sociological Association, Law Section, and was Runner-Up for the British Society of Criminology Book Prize for 2008. Dr. Vogel comes to Berkeley from University of Manchester, England, where she has been Professor of Law and Chair in Criminal Law 2011-20 and Honorary Professor of Law most recently. Prior to that, Mary taught at Kings College of the University of London.Mary Vogel received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Harvard University in 1988, with related study in Law. Mary's book, Coercion to Compromise (OUP), focused on origins of American bargaining. A recent chapter “Plea Bargaining Under the Common Law” in Brown, et al., Oxford Handbook of Criminal Process 2019 analyzes contemporary bargaining. As Visiting Scholar at NYU, 2014-17, Dr. Vogel made significant headway on her new archival study of English bargaining. It explores law amidst democratic stirrings of the Glorious Revolution (1690s) and the First Great Age of Reform (1820s-1830s).
