About Mary Beth Freeman
I have been providing individual (adults, adolescents and children), family and couple psychotherapy for over 25 years in both a non-profit community counseling clinic and private practice setting. My theoretical orientation is somewhat dependent upon what would be most appropriate for the client. My counseling approach is therefore client centered in that I view each client as unique and I use tools that are designed to meet that client's specific needs. Modalities I utilize are: Client-Centered, Play Therapy, Family Systems, Psychodynamic and Cognitive-Behavioral approaches. I am trained in EMDR and utilize that treatment when appropriate.As a therapist who is a Christian, I try to represent Christ in all aspects of my life in the ways I treat people and show them Christ's love. The counseling process often does this in a very subtle, yet profound way. I want to share an overview of my model for integration. I do not view the counseling process as an evangelistic tool and therefore do not judge or proselytize those I work with. Instead I come to sessions with a spirit of care and compassion. Jesus' example of coming alongside others who are hurting provides a model for my own counseling practice. When working with clients I listen carefully to them; empower them; confront them when appropriate; teach them; encourage them; and direct them in ways that help them continue to grow emotionally, spiritually, psychologically and socially. Counseling is a place where people need to be able to come and participate in a healing process without fear that they will be judged or coerced.I find gathering a thorough history allows me to be better informed regarding the client's strengths, what has or hasn't been helpful in the past, possible triggers, possible etiologies for behaviors and beliefs, possible support systems in place for the client, etc.Specialties: Conjoint/Couples/Family and Individual CounselingMediationPremarital & Couples Enrichment ProgramEMDR
