MARY S. KOHNKE WAGNER focuses her practice on workers’ compensation defense. She has represented a wide array of employers including hospitals/nursing homes, trucking, a regional transportation authority, municipal operations, police and firefighters, construction, restaurant, catering custodial services and a global security company.. Notably, Ms. Wagner uses the knowledge from her background in nursing to assist clients with complicated medical claims.Ms. Wagner began her nursing career at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. She also worked at Lankenau Hospital for many years in the surgical telemetry step down unit. These experiences have given her crucial insight to managing medically complex matters, in her position today.Upon earning her law degree, Ms. Wagner worked as in-house counsel for the fourth-largest property and casualty insurer in the United States. While at this global insurance company, she handled workers’ compensation issues.Over the last 34 years, prior to joining EMK, Ms. Wagner worked at three full-service Philadelphia law firms, serving as a shareholder. In her role as counsel, Ms. Wagner assisted clients in preventing claims and served as a consultant on pre-litigation matters.Ms. Wagner lectures frequently regarding medical-legal issues, utilizing her unique skill set as a registered nurse. She continues her commitment to the medical field and has served as a volunteer Haiti.While obtaining her MS in nursing, Ms. Wagner participated in research surrounding the stress levels experienced by nurses in different settings. In law school she served as student director of the Law Education and Participation Program (“LEAP”), which provided law related courses for Philadelphia students of all ages.
