About Mason Ellis

Im a recent graduate from the University of San Diego. Originally from Dallas, TX I spent nearly all of my summers as a boy in northeast Florida surfing, swimming and fishing. Back in Texas with no beach around I still found myself drawn to the water and became addicted to rowing, so much so I managed to secure myself a recruitment offer to row division 1 at Temple University and then, following a covid gap year, at the University of San Diego. Due to injury I didn’t finish my last 2 season of rowing and returned to surfing and being at the beach full time. Spending so much time out in nature from a young age I became incredibly aware of the issues facing our environment and how they impacted all life. Service and environmentally conscientious action have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember: whether it was diner service at the homeless shelter in Dallas or Surfrider cleanups at the beaches in Florida and San Diego. Working for a company that shares my strong desire for positive environmental and community action is something that is of utmost important to me, so much so that I spent a month studying B corps abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Having recently graduated I am open to work and hopeful to find myself in a professional environment within a company and alongside individuals who share my passion for climate action and community service.

  • Mission Surf Shop
    Sales Associate
Mission Surf Shop May 2023 - Mar 2024
San Diego County, California, United States
Through a close friend I found myself recommended for a position at Mission Surf, a local San Diego shop that has been around for over 50 years. I found myself working part time under owner and manager Benny Rodriguez a truly wonderful guy who made even the most stress filled and busy days light and enjoyable. Working at Mission Surf was a relaxed and humble environment that allowed me to get hands on experience in managing day to day businesses affairs and assume a wide variety of responsibilities that included opening and closing the store, managing rentals and Airbnb guests, tallying a pricing new merchandise and continuing to practice my customer service and sales skills. It was an incredible opportunity to be able to work during my last year or so of college and I won’t forget my days laughing with Benny in the cool beach breeze while being able to meet and converse with interesting customers from around the country and world.
  • International Trade Administration
    International Trade Assistant
International Trade Administration Jun 2023 - Aug 2023
    San Diego, California, United States
During the summer of 2023 I had the incredible opportunity to work as an International Trade Assistant as a part of the ITA, a branch of the US Department of Commerce. I worked with all the trade specialists in the office but was directed by Jaqueline Roeder who headed up the Intern program. Most of my days consisted of me acting as a shadow for Jaqueline, who had me sit in on her zoom meetings with local business allowing me to gain key insights into the needs and issues often faced by companies looking to export abroad. After meetings I would follow up with these companies helping to illuminate them regarding the export services provided by the ITA and which might be the best fit for them, as well as performing data analysis regarding market conditions and opportunities across various foreign locations. During my time at the ITA, I was trained and became quite skilled in the use of the Salesforce suite which I would utilize for data analysis on numerous occasions. I also frequently performed the data filing for new companies and contacts into the Salesforce platform on behalf of many different specialists in the office. At the tail end of my time there I had the remarkable task of helping to work on the contact list and pamphlet for the Dubai Airshow put on by the US Department of Commerce for the Aerospace and Defense Industry, which truly allowed me to see the scope of operations performed the ITA and the importance of international relations and communications for US businesses. In a similar fashion I helped to assemble a list of potential speakers for an Intellectual Property Protections seminar put on by the ITA at the University of San Deigo for local companies looking to do business in China. My time at the ITA was incredible and I am most grateful for the willingness of Jaqueline to share her experience with me and the ITA at larger for providing me with an opportunity to gain functional insight into the world of Internation Commerce.

Over the course of the week we teach them all of the basics or rowing, from how a boat works to taking strokes on the water, the end goal being to help them reach a degree of proficiency that they can continue rowing in the Intermediate camp, which takes place during the tame time slot under different coaching, should they decide to do so. Of course, all of this falls second to the most important thing: that all of the kids have tons of fun and are left with a lasting impression from the sport I love.

In 2021 I found myself with a great deal of free time and decided to find a new opportunity and work experience. I was lucky to be invited to work at the Lakewood Country Club where I met and worked under some incredible people. While it was hard work out in the Texas heat, the members and service team made it a truly rewarding experience and one I would happily return to anytime. This position taught me a great deal about teamwork and the importance of little details in ensuring that someone's experience is impactful and enjoyable. Additionally it continued to help me work on my communication skills as I spoke to members everyday, greeting them and doing my best make their experience with me and the club a memorable one.
