As Director of Marketing for San Jose Jazz I’m proud to be part of a team that’s shepherded the evolution of an organization that actively seeks to engage, educate and reflect its community and treats jazz as a growing and evolving art form—not a museum piece. To fulfill this mission we have placed ever more emphasis on high quality, long-standing education programs such as the High School All Stars and Summer Jazz Camp. We created Progressions, a youth development program that is rapidly growing in community support. The annual Winter Fest is a “lab” that presents artists such as Robert Glasper, José James and Thundercat, who are experimenting with some of jazz’s most contemporary forms. This programming and other marketing initiatives have contributed to major growth of our youth audience. I recently led staff, Board and community stakeholders through the creation of an exciting new visual brand that captures the dynamism of the organization and of the jazz art form.The annual, 3-day San Jose Jazz Summer Fest celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014, receiving national acclaim in JazzTimes and DownBeat, plus our first-ever "pick” in The New York Times. Attendance bested projections by double digits and ticket revenue surpassed our wildest hopes. KCSM Jazz 91, the Bay Area’s dominant jazz station, broadcast live from the Fest and I’m very excited that, for the first time, a 2-hour “highlights” show is being produced and syndicated to all NPR stations. To commemorate this very special year, I gathered a team to create a 62-page commemorative book that compellingly tells the story of San Jose Jazz’s past, present and future. Working with a graphic designer, created a visual brand for the 2011 Fest, expressed in collateral, advertising and standalone desktop and mobile websites. Trafficked all collateral and advertising. Executed all social media efforts, including a crowd curation initiative that increased organic Facebook audience by 20% in 8 weeks.
