• Recruited and built an in-house high performance team for the development of EFSET (the first ever free online standardised English test). Led a team of 15 staff with 7 direct reports.• Full ownership of technical direction, professionalised processes for the end-to-end SDLC, including introducing QA practices and release management.• Led development and delivery out of London coordinating distributed teams worldwide in Bangalore, Shanghai, Zurich, Boston and Stockholm.• Migrated the monolithic technology from PHP/MySQL to a Java/Vert.x/Cassandra/Elasticsearch/Akamai technology stack in under 4 months, aiming for a global release across EF schools (including in China).• Implemented a rota based first-line customer support structure with SLAs for supporting the product deployment in EF schools around the world.

• Devised and implemented the AWS infrastructure for the project, using EC2, S3, CloudFront and Route53, introduced HAProxy for Layer 7 processing, centralised logging with Syslog and Splunk, configuration management with Ansible, monitoring/alerting with Cacti and Nagios.• Introduced a release management process.• Co-developed a prototype for a computer adaptive multistage testing (ca-MST, using Item Response Theory) in PHP/MySQL.

• Tech lead and senior developer at SAPOFotos, a +10 million requests/day B2C community-oriented photos service, and tech project manager at Mediabank (internal editorial CMS used by journalists), led a team of 4 engineers and overall technical direction.• Provided technical expertise and guidance to entrepreneurs, as an invited mentor for CODEBITS Labs 2012, a programme that financially sponsored a selection of promising Portuguese tech projects/startups.• Introduced Agile methodologies, Continuous Integration and automated deployments (CruiseControl, Apache Ant, phpUnderControl, Cintient).• Devised and implemented a high scalability image delivery platform called quickCachr, achieving 5x performance gains in raw image delivery (PHP, C, HAProxy, NGiNX, nginx-eval-module,Apache, Squid, MySQL, memcached).• Wrote a C log parser for serial processing in near realtime of up to 15,000 logs per second, generating business and technical metrics for a custom dashboard from the several gigabytes of logs generated daily.• Developed a PHP library for handling advanced cache usage, namely support for cache group handling, cache eviction, throttling and cache stampede prevention (PHP, memcached).
