Focussing initially on Smart Foodsheds, Digital Agriculture, and Conservation/Ecology we are building a national infrastructure that enables artificial intelligence at the flick of a switch. ICICLE is transforming today’s AI landscape from a narrow set of privileged disciplines to one where democratized AI empowers domains broadly through integrated plug-and-play AI. Converging under one virtual roof, ICICLE will foster interdisciplinary communities, advance foundational AI and CI, and transform application domains. Through its innovative approach to training and technology transfer, ICICLE will grow an AI-enabled workforce and incubate innovative companies with sustained diversity and inclusion at all levels. Ultimately, ICICLE will enable a transparent and trustworthy national infrastructure for an AI-enabled future to address pressing societal problems and enable decision-making for national priorities.Developed by a consortium of researchers, educators, and community leaders from Artificial Intelligence (AI), cyberinfrastructure (CI), and food systems, precision agriculture, and animal ecology domains across thirteen institutions, ICICLE employs an edge-to-center, plug and play model that builds trustworthiness into the system by leveraging domain knowledge to facilitate contextual, sustainable, and democratizing outcomes. Democratizing AI demands not only equitable access, but trustworthiness in practice and research. This is performed at ICICLE’s Institutional Level through team-wide workforce development training activities in unconscious bias and bias in data and models; through the implementation of a project-wide, auditable (transparent and reproducible) workflows; and through the co-design of field edge-to-HPC/Cloud infrastructure. And, it is executed at the AI/System Level through data integrity and privacy preserving practices, and through an ontology-driven system architecture focused on traceable, conversational, and graphical explainability.

Assembling international public, private, and NGO stakeholders to design and build build the Internet of Food (IoF). See www.ic-foods.orgPart Semantic Web, part Internet of Things, the Internet of Food is emerging as an internet with massive horizontal scale across environment <=> ag <=> food <=> diet <=> health scientific disciplines, vertical scale across economic sectors, dimensional scale from the molecular to global interactions. Everybody eats--yet inappropriate advice about food contribues to 5 of top 7 killers in the US and globally. Everybody eats--the main reason agriculture is the most environmentally destructive activity in which humans engage. The mandate could not be more clear. Humanity needs now more than ever, an infrastructure enabling global interoperability of data, information, and knowledge about food, health, and sustainability.

Teaching capstone class in Food Product Innovation and Development. A lecture and lab of ~70 students.Includes development of: novel food products, appropriate package design, generation of package labels that meet all FDA and USDA guidelines, presentation of marketing and sustainability plans, and appropriate health/function claims that meet all regulatory requirements. Class culminates in competition sponsored by multiple members of the food industry.

Teaching experience in food, nutrition, health, and informatics. I have designed new courses in food and nutrition informatics, and advise an active research group in this field.
