This was a mechanical engineering position where I worked on the design for drug delivery systems for diabetes patients. I designed and prototyped an attach and release mechanism for a disposable cartridge fixture that inserts into a device housing. I designed test fixtures, set up experiments, and conducted these tests to acquire and analyze data for the characterization of electric motors used for dose accuracy testing to ensure the motors were performing up to their specs. Characterization data included speed, current, power and torque which was collected using lab equipment such as Keyence CL 3000 (optic laser), Keyence 3D scanner, Zwick mechanical tester and Keysight power analyzer. Other projects included creating a light fixture for an optical assessment of the drug. I collaborated with the electrical/software engineering co-op to program Adafruit LED strips using Arduino and then I setup the wire configuration to setup the lights in series using the Arduino board. The code was written so that the user could control the light intensity, color, and brightness. This project was a way to enhance the user-interface with auto-injectors which we successfully created and setup for testing in future prototypes. In addition to this, I had the chance to learn more about injection molding practices. They gave me the opportunity to create mold designs for one of the device components, performing draft designs and creating mold blocks in SolidWorks to 3D print the molds to use in the in-house injection molder. This was more of a learning experience as injection molding of plastics is heavily used in the medical device industry. All in all, this experience allowed me to learn more about the design process for consumer/medical device products. I greatly improved my prototyping and CAD designing skills along with my intrapersonal skills as I worked with and collaborated with cross-functional teams and disciplines within the company.

I had the opportunity to work on Medica's machine vision and ion-selective electrode product lines. The machine vision product combines robotics with high-resolution optics and digital cameras to assist in the automated preparation of blood samples and cell counting. The ion-selective electrode product line applies the principles of molded part design, fluid handling, usability, ease of service, and industrial design to in vitro diagnostic medical devices. By using CAD, 3D printing technology, rapid prototyping, and designing/documenting new products and fixtures, I got to dive in and experience the medical device industry for the first time.

As a Manufacturing Engineering Co-op at Trillium Flow Technologies, I had the opportunity to oversee the production side of a company. This experience allowed me to learn from project managers, machinists, welders, assemblers, and even quality engineers. This was an eye-opening experience as my first engineering position because of the exposure gained to understand what it takes to run a project and pushed products through from start to finish. I used my time at Trillium to learn more about the CNC machines, how to TIG weld, and improve some of the processes around the facility by making them more efficient and safer.
