About Mathieu Halpin
I'm Mathieu Halpin, a BA in Anthropology graduate from the University of Colorado.I aim to uncover the underlying cultural dynamics in large-scale gatherings and the associated commodification processes. My investigation spans historical contexts and the contemporary landscape, delving into iconic events such as the Kentucky Derby, political conventions, and The Iditarod. I am also interested in American labor and union history, visual arts, the American West, the Atomic Age, circus sideshows/cultural oddities, and low culture.Drawing inspiration from the perspectives of theorists such as Guy Debord, Theodor Adorno, Susan Sontag, and Christopher Lasch, my research seeks to analyze the spectacle and consumer culture inherent in these gatherings. Debord's concept of the spectacle allows me to examine the mediated and performative aspects of such events, shedding light on how they shape societal values and perceptions. Lasch's insights into the culture of narcissism guide my exploration of the commodification of experiences, considering how these gatherings serve as platforms for creating and consuming cultural products.Through this dual anthropological and historical lens, I aspire to unravel the intricate relationships between collective rituals and cultural identity that influence and shape these events. By understanding the historical evolution and contemporary manifestations of large-scale gatherings, I hope to contribute valuable insights into the broader discourse surrounding cultural phenomena and the commodification of shared experiences.I was involved in the Media Archaeology Lab as a Researcher-in-Residence, where I wrote a paper on the technical workings of BBS and the early days of online dating. I worked as a Media Archiving and Preservation Fellow in the University of Colorado Library's archives throughout my senior year. I have previously been an editor for three years for the CU Independent, the University of Colorado's largest student-run publication.I actively seek job opportunities within higher education research, archives, publishing, labor organizing, non-profits, and museums. I am excited to see where my passion for culture, the arts, media, and history will take me next.
