About Mat Lawrence
Experienced technology and operations executive with an e-commerce focus. What's going on in 2024? All manner of things, but I'm focusing on reverse logistics and getting a better hold on our returns process. Why would anyone want to send these super cool costumes back, anyway? Seriously, my closet is full of them.

President / Cto
A recent bio said this about me:As President, Mat is responsible for executing the company’s business plan, leadership accountability and cohesion, organizational clarity and communication, and P&L results. That's pretty formal! Really what I do is work with a bunch of cool people on all kinds of projects - tech, logistics, product development, finance, marketing, and even the creative folk let me see what they're working on sometimes. I try to help them out where I can and remove anything that's getting in the way of them doing the best work possible. And I frequently look at numbers, many of which have dollar signs in front of them.
Chief Technology Officer
I am on a team of exceptional developers and technologists, and we work together to support an equally exceptional business team in delivering FUN products to people around the world. Some interesting projects we've done:- Converted an entire end-to-end system from classic ASP to C# .NET (most of it)- Created a high availability server environment that handles millions of page views in October and saved money in the process- Built an eCommerce marketplace integration system that may or may not resemble BizTalk- Grew a team of several developers to a team of several times several developers- Implemented a lite agile development process in place of no development process- Added project management in place of no project management- Added quality assurance in place of no quality assurance- Created a culture of tech-savviness where our business teams can plan and execute software projects- Automated cross-departmental workflows where no clear process existed previously- Made a slow, monolithic database relatively fast- Turned a paper-based warehouse process into a full-blown WMS with rugged handheld devices- Seriously, it was paper before!
Systems Architect
How do you make a classic ASP server environment scale up to handle 3+ million page views per day in October? It's all a blur. One year of that was enough; the next year we re-wrote the system in C# .NET and never looked back.
Solutions Architect
At CGI I was deep into mobile web development with HTML5 and adaptive techniques as well as some basic iOS and fairly complex Android development. I created an NFC program for the Samsung Nexus S (first consumer NFC-enabled device) using undocumented Android APIs to read/write to NFC chips, and later extended it to store .vcf contact information on NFC chip enabled business cards that would allow people to bump phones to exchange contact information. Not to be confused with the Bump app, which communicated information over the internet - this was a direct exchange.I also helped out with the rest of the dev team when I could - we refactored the core business and data layers of the B2B ordering system to get away from the Entity Framework performance issues, and we performance tuned & scaled the web and database servers to handle Verizon's big 4G promotion.
Principal Developer/Team Lead
Lead Systems Integration Architect
I worked alongside a very talented Enterprise Architect to integrate an ERP system from the Asia-Pacific business division with the main automation control system. Some of the key concepts I picked up were: rugged mobile device config & development, remote and international team collaboration, creating architectural models in a daily production capacity (Sparx EA), and functioning as part of a truly international business.
Chief Architect
I started my career at James Tower as an entry-level developer while attending college, and my role grew over the years along with the company - from 13 people when I started to 165 people in three locations. We were on the leading edge of the internet boom, starting out by porting client server applications to the web and helping companies establish an internet presence. On the development side, I worked on a wide variety of full life cycle projects - mainly with a web focus - and had the opportunity to perform many roles including technical sales, business analyst, architect, developer, integrator, webmaster, and dev ops. On the business side, I managed the QA department, managed a team of core system developers, participated in company leadership meetings, and helped define and create positions and fill them as the need and company grew. The company's rapid growth gave me and others some very unique opportunities to do things that we were highly unqualified to do, at least on paper. It was an incredible learning experience for me.
