About Mats Ekstrand
I am a creative molecular biologist with a strong track record in mouse genetics and neurobiology. My work has been focused on technology development and I have built molecular tools to study the connectivity and gene expression of neurons. During my graduate studies at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, I created the MitoPark mouse model of Parkinson’s disease and also studied the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in cortical neurodegeneration. I am the first author of a paper in Cell where we describe a methodology for molecular profiling of neurons based on their connectivity.

My thesis work was on the topics of mtDNA regulation and the role of mitochondria in neurodegenerative disorders. I developed the MitoPark model of Parkinson's disease; a model that reproduces the progressive loss of dopamine neurons observed in patients and also responds to L-DOPA treatment.
