After selling McBride's, my brother and I built the EastBurn in Portland, OR. There's nothing quite like opening a business during a downturn. When your back is against the wall, you truly have a chance to shine. Mike and I still own the EastBurn and it is one of the greatest places in stumptown. I stepped away from daily operations in 2011 to open the Standard Club. One of the greatest compliments in the world is to meet a random person who has been influenced by your small business. The Standard may remain as one of the greatest social clubs to grace the streets of Doylestown. A private social club built from scratch, rising to 500 members within the first year. We served true farm to table fare, sourced from the wonderful Bucks County region. From weddings, to community meetings, to fundraisers and private dinners, there were many memories created here. My entrepreneurial career was born! Do what you love and make people happy. For many years I dreamt of owning an outdoor sports store...perhaps that dream is still alive. We sold everything from cross country skis, to Rollerblades, to skis that worked like roller skates, kayaks, clothes and more. At 16 I was teaching Rollerblading classes, and at 17 I spent the summer outside our store teaching Kayak classes. Great experiences and great stories.
