Despite the realization that the construction field is not for the feign of heart, I still took my dad’s advice at the age of twenty and started an apprenticeship with a smaller door installer company. After working as a general contractor, I understood that this was a great starting point. I was able to learn multiple aspect of the field through this apprenticeship, from rough carpentry, finished carpentry and access control requirements. After approximately six months I was able to run a crew under a jobsite superintendent. I would oversee the quality control of installation of hardware, doors, and frames as well as production efficiency. I worked on multiple jobs of varying sizes from Banner Hospital in Tucson, CAT Headquarters in Tucson, Health Science Innovations Building in Tucson, and Raytheon Expansion in Tucson. I then did continue to follow as my family had with moving to a general contractor, Sundt. This experience has been exponential for my growth as builder. Since February of 2019 I have worked on the Texas Instruments Project in Tucson. I started this project at the initial GMP and 50% design documents. I was able to participate in contract redlines and negotiation, buy out and design assistance of complex MEP systems for lab situations, and GMP acceptance process. When I did first start the job, it was as an Intern, but quickly within seven months moving to a project engineer. Through some unforeseen circumstances, people leaving and COVID, the document control did solely fall on myself being the only engineer onsite. This allowed me room to grow and assist in constructability meetings, schedule, change and cost management, submittal review and coordination, and RFI drafting and integration. The experience was that of learning to swim by being thrown in the water, this did cause for many learning experiences along the way. It is easier to learn beforehand, but you never forget correcting something after the fact.
