Wildlife Conservation Research InternMogalakwena Research Centre And River Lodge Apr 2015 - Jun 2015Mogalakwena Research Centre And River Lodge, Alldays, South AfricaInternship involved the design and implication of research on a topic of your choice, mine being large herbivore counts to establish an estimate of population size for the ungulate species found on the reserve. Other duties included assisting with alien plant control, habitat surveys, bird surveys, and fecal analysis for parasites (in various wild and domestic species). I was also asked to give lectures on the natural history of the area, giving new participants to the program information on the wildlife found in the area (mainly mammals and birds). I also took new participants on walks to teach them tracks and signs, plants, and navigating themselves within the reserve. This data collection required the use of GPS devices.

Wildlife Conservation Research InternGlobal Vision International Jan 2015 - Apr 2015Karongwe Game Reserve, Hoedspruit, South AfricaAssisted in the collection and input of behavioral and spacial data on large mammal species, including but not limited to lions, leopards, elephants, rhino and buffalo. Herbivore, bird and tree surveys were also carried out to assist in reserve management, as well as lectures on the natural history of the area and current conservation issues. It was also required to conduct a debate with the other interns on a current conservation issue, as well as design and implement a leadership project. My project was the creation of a giraffe identification kit in which individual giraffes can be identified by their spot patterns. This was to aid in reserve management and to monitor animal health and movements, as well as gather information on the population's gender and age ratios. This data collection required the use of radio transmitting and GPS devices. -
