I've got over a decade’s experience working on leading-edge sustainability projects in New Zealand and advocating for significant improvements in the built environment’s sustainability outcomes.I founded and lead Crank, a consultancy that delivers innovative transport projects focused on getting more people to choose more trips by walking and cycling. Over 2021-2022 the team at Crank have managed the delivery of tactical urbanism projects at more than 20 sites across the North Island, while looking for opportunities within Councils for process-change to make tactical urbanism delivery more streamlined over time. My contribution on these types of projects includes setting project strategy and methodology, leading multidisciplinary project teams, process innovation, and managing complex stakeholder relationships that span community groups, elected Councillors, and local and central government teams.I was a lead contributor to and coordinator of the development of Waka Kotahi NZTA’s 2020 Tactical Urbanism Handbook for Aotearoa, a guidebook for project teams across New Zealand. Crank is now leading an upgrade project for the Handbook and helping Waka Kotahi plan for a refresh of its national Urban Design guidelines.I commit 10% of my working week to delivering community projects. The focus of these recently has been on enabling safe and active travel by young children, working with groups across my community to set up programs for 4-10-year-olds to bike safely to school, their Saturday morning football matches, and adjoining suburbs. During 2019 I co-led the delivery of a one-day pilot Play Street event attended by 1,500 community members and a suburb-wide driveway safety campaign that saw 150 children mail-drop 3,000 homes with flyers encouraging safer practices by all street users. Taken together, these initiatives form a strategic approach to community activation that offer an effective means of engaging communities before, during and after capital works projects such as cycleways.
