My role as an Applications Engineer requires me to manage a project through from the receipt of order, all the way up to manufacture and site installation. This requires heavy liaison with the client. The main part of my role is the design of LV switchboards for clients across the UK. This includes the layout of the Switchboards, as well as bespoke controls circuits designed to meet our clients needs. I am proficient at using AutoCAD as this is the software that I primarily use for most aspects of my role.Other parts of my role include creating parts lists and supporting production during the fabrication and manufacture of LV Switchboards.

This required heavy liaison with the client. The main part of my role was the design of LV switchboards for clients across the country. This included the initial concept designs and revised designs that are discussed with the customer as well as bespoke controls circuits designed to meet our clients needs. I am proficient at using AutoCAD as this is the software that I primarily use for both enclosure drawings and controls drawings.Other parts of my role include creating BoMs, supporting production during the manufacture of LV panels and procurement of components for each project.

My role as an Electrical switchgear technician meant that I followed the production of Switchboards from start to finish. This included the assembly and fitting of all components, the wiring of components and the installation of components.Whilst I am competent in all aspects of this role, I particularly enjoyed and excelled at the control wiring of the switchboards. This is because I have a good understanding of what individual components do and have the ability to accurately interpret schematics - a skill I now use for Engineering. I took particular enjoyment in wiring complex controls circuits, such as change-over systems or circuits that operate in tandem with a PLC.I would also visit many sites, where I would have to do various tasks such as installs of LV panels, modifications to existing switchboards and servicing of panels which have been in operation for many years.

During my time as an electrical apprentice, I learnt the basics of LV panel building. I became competent at reading schematics, fitting out panel compartments with the appropriate components and working both independently and as part of a team to complete LV panel builds. One part of this job that I particularly excelled at was wiring out components in an accurate and neat fashion. I was also given the opportunity to visit various sites, where I learnt how to install LV panels as well as how to make modifications to existing switchboards. To do this, I had to get an appropriate ECS card.Upon completing my apprenticeship, I achieved a level 3 NVQ. At the same time as doing my NVQ, I also completed a level 3 course in 'Electrical and Electronic Engineering', in which I achieved Distinction grades.
