The design of a rover exploring the extreme environment of the lunar South-pole craters is carried on in the framework of the 2nd level specialising master in SpacE Exploration and Development Systems. The complex design faces different challenges: the high slope of the craters, the extremely low temperatures and the lack of light that characterize the permanently shadowed regions.

The study is focused on the design of an ECLSS system for a manned lunar outpost hosting 4 crew members. A new modular concept is taken into account together with inflatable solutions. Three different system architectures are considered and evaluated: open loops, semi-closed loops based on ISS technologies and a Mars test-bed design, which exploits new technologies, as 3d printing of garments and food.

Inside an international team, the works focuses on the selection of the cabin atmosphere for a manned lunar habitat, whose goal is to support the production of propellant by exploiting in situ resources. The study is carried out by proposing a new methodology:• A Multi-Objective Optimisation based on a genetic algorithm is used to find the set of optimal solutions in terms of human physiology, cost and Extra-Vehicular Activity performance.• A mathematical trade-off based on TOPSIS is used to select the optimal solution among the pareto-front points. The figures of merit are weighted by using the Analytical Hierarchy Process method.

The aim of the work was to verify the correct antenna integration procedure on a new generation of satellites Neosat. A statistical approach was performed with Montecarlo method to check the correct design of the antenna mechanism capabilities. The second part of the work was focused on the alignment process optimization.

Pisa, Italia

The work focused on different debris mitigation procedures. Among the various techniques, de-orbit was selected as the most effective one. Different de-orbit techniques were numerically analysed thanks to a personal Octave code and compared with ESA DRAMA results.
