Matthew Geller is the President and co-founder of JOYN, an independent Registered Investment Advisor believed to be the first and only Behavioral Wealth Management firm in the nation. More than a decade ago, we saw that our wealthy clients weren’t living the meaningful, joyful lives they desired, and began looking for answers and reviewing research in behavioral economics, neuro-biology, and positive psychology. Traditional wealth management focuses on numbers: how much you’ll need and when you’ll need it. But that outdated money-centric model ignores one key truth: we don’t live our lives by numbers, and money by itself doesn’t make us happy. Moreover, traditional investment management presumes that people always make rational decisions – calculating costs and benefits and focusing on relevant criteria – but our experience showed that’s not what people do. We concluded that the traditional financial planning model was broken and embarked upon a mission to fix it. We’ve invested over a decade developing Behavioral Wealth Management, a new model that embraces science and our humanity so we can help our clients overcome challenges and use all their wealth (not just money) to create extraordinary, joyful lives. Our model augments our trusted expertise in traditional wealth management with new competencies in stress and decisions, life event expertise and what we call our “passion for the human factor,” so we can better guide our clients through personal & professional decisions that affect their money, wealth and quality of life.We’re decidedly different from most wealth managers – distinctions reflected in our core values, people, and process.
