I investigated why some species are relatively resistant to anoxia, whilst most mammals can survive only a matter of minutes in the absence of oxygen, with a particular emphasis on cellular processes within heart tissue. The aim of this work is to identify cellular pathways that may be of medical benefit in protecting against ischaemic cardiac events.
