I investigated why some species are relatively resistant to anoxia, whilst most mammals can survive only a matter of minutes in the absence of oxygen, with a particular emphasis on cellular processes within heart tissue. The aim of this work is to identify cellular pathways that may be of medical benefit in protecting against ischaemic cardiac events.

Visiting lecturer - Covered the ‘Cellular Cardiology’ component for the final year module ‘Muscle Fitness and Failure’, 2012 at the University of Hull. Duties included giving lectures and both the setting and assessment of exam questions.Taught on “Microelectrode Techniques for Cell Physiology”, Plymouth, September 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.Assisted in the supervision of project students undertaking cardiac physiology experiments at the University of Leeds, 2008, 2009 & 2010.Guest lecturer at the University of Derby for the course: “Physiological Mechanisms of Health and Disease” in Spring 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012; and the course: “Pathological Microbial Interactions” in Spring 2009.Demonstrated for undergraduate practical sessions “BS1006: An Introduction to Physiology”, human electrophysiology experiments incorporating surface electrodes; “BS2012: Animal Physiology”, electrocardiogram measurements; and “BS2014: Physiology and Pharmacology II”, crab nerve physiology, throughout 2003-2006 at the University of Leicester.
  • University Of Leeds
    Research Fellow
University Of Leeds Jun 2007 - Nov 2013

I undertook two postdoctoral positions in Leeds: the first investigated cardiac dysfunction during sepsis and the second, heterogeneity in the right failing ventricle. A wide variety of techniques were utilized including electrophysiological techniques (patch clamp, dSEVC, action potential clamp), fluorescent measurements, optical mapping and balloon catheter pressure measurements.
  • Astrazeneca
    Contract Researcher
    Astrazeneca Feb 2007 - Jun 2007
    Cheshire, Uk.
My main responsibility at AstraZeneca was to implement a safety pharmacology assay (developed during my PhD) 'in house' - for use use within Safety Assessment. This also included writing the Standard Operating Procedure, training colleagues, and developing a higher degree of automation to both the running of the assay and the analysis of the results.
  • Gsk
    Student Intern
    Gsk Aug 2000 - Aug 2001
    King Of Prussia, Pa
The research undertaken at Glaxosmithkline formed a sandwich year as part my undergraduate studies. This work involved studying anti-thrombosis compounds used for treatment of stroke. This primarily used thrombelastography and radioligand-binding assays.
