Sxip Identity was a startup that created both enterprise and end-user identity management solutions. I was product manager for Sxipper, a Firefox plugin for password and identity information.The small size of our team allowed plenty of hands-on work in different areas, which was thoroughly satisfying. I enjoyed providing customer support as, in addition to helping guide the product features, it gave me all sorts of raw material for the online FAQ and user guide. The intense process of prioritization of features and refining the UX, and the methods we used to capture our thoughts are tools I still use today.

ActiveState was the company that first ported Perl to Microsoft Windows. They went on to develop a suite of tools for open source languages, including the Komodo IDE, for which I was hired as product marketing manager.Over the years I was given product management responsibility for the full line of developer tools. When Sophos purchased the company for its anti-spam solution PureMessage, the developer tools were maintained as a separate division. I was on the division's management team, and also oversaw sales and marketing.Our team delivered many releases, winning awards and accolades in the press, and earning us an avid following in the open source community. The products remain popular and successful to this day, of which I am proud.The tools division was sold to a group of investors in 2006 to become ActiveState Software Inc. For the transition I took charge of finding new office space, leasehold improvements, and move logistics.

My prior expertise in SQA TeamTest landed me the sales engineer job with Rational's western Canada sales team. I then certified in requirements management, performance testing, and software version control tools, to deliver many onsite training sessions for enterprise clients. The sales team consistently achieved growth and hit tough sales targets.After two years I was headhunted by the local development manager to product manage a new tool, the Rational Process Workbench. Our team successfully delivered the 1.0 version. Later the Rational Unified Process (RUP) was added to my product roster, for which the localization into Japanese and Simplified Chinese was a personal highlight.

Visual Systems was a software consulting company that specialized in client/server software development, source code control, and testing.I was hired to meet the demand for SQA TeamTest automated testing and PVCS version control consulting, for which I certified soon after joining. SQA TeamTest work took off since we were contracted by SQA Inc. to deliver training all over the US, including engagements with NBC, Onyx Software, and Mass Mutual. Lots of frequent flyer points!

As the sales engineer for western Canada I traveled a lot, giving presentations to companies, users groups, and at trade shows. The opportunity to interact with users directly at these events gave me a intimate understanding of user experience. It was also an exciting time as user interfaces were evolving fast.I developed an in-house CRM and published a quarterly customer newsletter.In 1994 I relocated to the head office in Toronto to provide hands-on management of cross-Canada marketing tours and advertising.

HYCO Submersibles was a startup focused on creating acrylic-hulled submersibles for tourism and science. The Gemini was an 8-person submersible rated for 2580' and the Aries was a 46-person submersible rated for 250'. Started as the IT person, managing systems, software, and user training. I later became the Marketing Coordinator, responsible for the prospect database, collateral, and international trade show attendance.
