About Matthew Curtis

I am a broadly trained anthropological archaeologist with thirty years of archaeological field and laboratory experience and more than twenty years of college/university teaching experience in the U.S. and Africa. I have directed and co-directed archaeological research and cultural resources management and cultural heritage preservation projects in Africa and teach courses in archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and African Studies. My particular research interests include: the origins and development of ancient complex societies and urbanism in the Horn of Africa, East Africa, and the southern Red Sea area; surface archaeology; landscape archaeology; ethnoarchaeology; origins of food production; culture contact and inter-regional interaction studies; household archaeology; rock art; African historical archaeology and anthropology; cultural resource management and heritage conservation in Africa, and California archaeology.
